Like growing numbers of public high school students across the country, many California kids are receiving classroom instruction in how race, class, gender, sexuality and citizenship status are tools of oppression, power and privilege. They're taught about colonialism, state violence, racism, intergenerational trauma, heteropatriarchy and the common thread that links them: whiteness.

Advocates believe they are within striking distance of making ethnic studies a graduation requirement in high schools across the country, making it a prerequisite for preparing students to navigate the world, much as learning about the Western tradition had once been.

We dont want students to have the option not to take ethnic studies, said Melina Abdullah, a professor Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, and a board member of the national Association for Ethnic Studies. It is as important as taking a lab science.

"It comes dangerously close to turning American exceptionalism on its head: Yes, we're exceptional exceptionally evil, said Will Swaim, president of the California Policy Center, a free market think tank. "It is remindful of re-education camps in Vietnam or China. It is indoctrination rather than education.

I oftentimes think of ethnic studies as radical social action, said Julia Jordan-Zachery, a professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and president of the Association for Ethnic Studies.

Conservative critics said the course content constituted a form of hate speech and fomented racial resentment. The ban was challenged in court. At the trial, then-Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne denounced the class as extremely anti-American and destructive ethnic chauvinism, alleging it promoted essentially revolution against the American government, that the borders were artificial, [and] that the bronze continent was for the bronze people.

And so I must ask once again..
Just WHAT IN THE HELL is Betsy DeVos doing to earn her paycheck as Secretary of Education???
Yeah, we all see the results every thanksgiving. /s
Read my comment under the post “Coming to a Curriculum Near You...”
Woke history has about as much relation to actual archived history as social justice has to actual practicing justice.
The Jugend are being drilled well. Soon it shall not be necessary to do this on a daily basis, the kids will regurgitate the lessons by rote with no encouragement at all.
McGovern and McCarthy were real big in America’s High Schools 50 years ago.
The real question is, why does the majority white population stand for this BS? It’s time for parents to demand that real history be taught, not this propaganda.
Well gee gosh wonder why California made weed legal, takes less time to train?.
Do not use the word WOKE. It is liberal propaganda. Don't use it. Don't spread it. Don't acknowledge it.
Perhaps discussion of it should be banned here on Good Old FR. But I doubt Jim would go for that.
I seriously doubt that it's a free market think tank.
Illinois has just added a required LBGT history content to elementary school textbooks. Also, textbooks must be pro Union now. I expect climate change is coming.
I said to my 9th grader, a California public school student:
"The refreshing thing about teenagers is that they see right through all the baloney their school teachers try to feed them."
She replied:
They really do. For example, everybody knows that it was the Republicans who freed the slaves, but they don't mention that in school. Everybody knows it though, and we talk about things like that.
And this from my 6th grader:
"Do you know what they are teaching us in school? That humans are killing the oceans and destroying the planet and we're all going to die from global warming."
When I asked:
"Do any of the students fall for that nonsense?"
She replied, half laughing from amusement and shock:
"Some DO!"
At what point does teaching anti Americanism in our public schools become sedition? Maybe someone should pose that question to President Trump.
Union education is the enemy.
I do not agree with that at all. At least on FR, the word "woke" is only used in a pejorative manner. Even the Urban Disctionary knows that the word makes fun of the very "woke" themselves:
woke
The act of being very pretentious about how much you care about a social issue
Yeah most people don't care about parking spaces for families with disabled pets. I wish they were woke like me.
#woke#social justice#sjw#hipster#progressive#feelthebern
We are sitting here watching the realization of 1984.
Good. Then they should love Trump’s comments at the UN earlier today.
I’m more wondering where are all of the conservative parents that dont seem to care all that much in these school districts.
You probably have the Urban Dictionary cited correctly. And it may describe how Freepers feel about WOKE.
But pretentious is not even close to describing what the Libs have in mind. They want WOKE to be in our everyday vocabulary. They want allegiance to its use for projecting how much more sensitive communists and socialists (AKA Democrats) are to the universal suffering of blacks, Browns, gays, women, homeless ... you name it.
Dont fall into the trap. Even making fun of this stupid idea is, IMHO, harmful. Its not too late to kill its usage ... At least Im hoping so.
That is absolute CRAP. The libtard politicians, listening to libtard "progressive educational reformers" (read: commie indoctrinators), dictate to school administrators what curriculum will be. The administrators dictate to teachers what curriculum will be. The teachers either stick to the program or lose their jobs. Some teachers are willing participants in this commie garbage, but many are not. But they have families of their own to feed and mortgages, so it's go along to get along. Blame the politicians. I'm not defending the union; they are fat corrupt toads who parasitize teachers' paychecks. But they do not dictate curriculum or what subject matter is to be promulgated.
