The Russian River in Northern California has a poop problem, and county officials say drunken beachgoers aren’t helping any, The Press Democrat reports.

Yes, contamination of rivers, sidewalks, parks, or anything else with human excrement is an enormous health hazard. It's a time bomb waiting to go off, and those who tolerate such conditions are responsible.

Santa Cruz routinely blames birds. They also litter the beaches with used (free) needles. Bad birds.
Sometimes I comment that SF is not as bad as the stereotype of crap being everywhere. However... while driving the Great Highway along the SF beach in the last couple weeks I've noticed a growing camp of RV's and trailers along the beach, definitely appear to be homeless people in these vehicles (lack of wheels on some, sitting on jacks). Definitely illegal but allowed by city authorities. No doubt that they're dumping waste into the Pacific Ocean waters nearby. (I never go in the water, only walk the trails.)
