Fans who expected Sylvester Stallone's returns as John Rambo to dominate the box office are in for a surprise. Rambo: Last Blood opens in third place. Instead, the Downton Abbey movie makes a surprise debut in the top spot with a record-setting opening for studio Focus Features. James Gray’s sci-fi film Ad Astra will take the second-place spot.

Downton Abbey earned $13.8 million on Friday. The film will earn $30.5 million in its opening weekend. The movie is a continuation of the popular television drama about a noble British family in the early 20th century and their servants. Creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, which sees the British royal family pay a visit to Downton Abbey. Michael Engler directs and the show’s core cast returns.

Ad Astra earned $7 million on Friday on its way to a $19.21 million opening. James Gray directs and co-writes the film. Bard Pitt stars as an astronaut searching space for his father, whose experiment gone wrong threatens the solar system. The film also stars Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland.

Third place goes to Rambo: Last Blood with $19 million for the weekend. Rambo: Last Blood sees Stallone reprising his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo for the first time since 2008’s Rambo. In this film, Rambo is on a mission to retrieve his friend’s kidnapped daughter from a Mexican drug cartel.

I suspect the Rambo demographic is not today's theater crowd.

Left wing liberal will claim the Rambo movie is all about just killing Mexicans.

In "Tango & Cash", Stallone's character said "Ramo's a ****y."

Saw Downton. Got lost in the characters. That gay nightclub scene was funny. Was it a setup?

If it gets in the face of liberals, “Rambo” is a must-see for me. I might see “Downtown Abbey” because it’s not R-rated.

There is a gay nightclub scene in the movie?

There is rumored to be a homosexual mafia in Hollywood, which has veto power over how homosexuality is portrayed in movies and TV.

I’m sure it was inserted into the movie to let us know about homosexuality in the 1920s/1930s, whatever the time period of this movie is.

I don’t get the fascination with Downton Abbey.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Rambo has a bit of a delayed surge. There may be a word-of-mouth factor that takes time to build.

If it gets in the face of liberals, “Rambo” is a must-see for me.

When I saw liberal reviews condemning Gerard Butler's "Fallen" films as right-wing, jingo-istic and xenophobic, I knew I had to see them.

Oh come on. Rambo (5th in a series) is edged out by just 1% by a new story with multiple big names. It did 2/3rds of a major movie debut of a recent popular TV series. No reason whatsoever to portray it as a failure.

My knowledge about D.A. consists of this topic and a vignette from an episode of "Comedians In Cars".

>>>Fans who expected Sylvester Stallone’s returns as John Rambo to dominate the box office are in for a surprise<<<

Who are these “Fans” they are talking about? I never heard anyone say that the new Rambo would dominate the Box Office.

Rumored? Have you not watched any TV in the last 5 years? Nearly every TV show has its obligatory gay/lesbian kissing scene(s).

Last year I recorded a typical CW program. While cutting out the commercials, I also cut out several lesbian-encounter scenes. The final product was about 32 minutes of content, meaning about 10 minutes was lesbian.

Now, they seem to be moving toward 3-ways, M-M-F and M-F-F. I have seen those in 2 different programs (Netflix and Freeform) aimed at the younger generation with such hook-ups.

I suspect that most of us in the Last Blood demographic don't waste our times visiting movie theaters anymore. It's rare (like maybe every 5 years) that a movie is compelling enough for me to want to bother to go to the theater (subject to their schedule), pay the premium, deal with the feral youth, and then have to sit through 15 overly loud irrelevant previews and/or ads prior to seeing the film.

I'll just wait and watch it at home at my convenience and enjoyment.

They already have claimed that. Read the Reviews.

I’m sure they are surprised there isn’t a Scene in the Movie with Rambo coming down a Golden Escalator wearing a MAGA Hat.

Hadn’t a chance to read the reviews since in any case it’ll be what I mentioned, Rambo killing Mexicans. I will get the DVD when it comes out though.

“When I saw liberal reviews condemning Gerard Butler’s “Fallen” films as right-wing, jingo-istic and xenophobic, I knew I had to see them.

Back in the 50’s and before as well the Catholic Church would issue a “ban” on certain books and movies and forbid Catholics to see the movie or read the book. This “ban” of course immediately made the movie or book a guaranteed best seller and box office smash.

Peyton Place written by Grace Metalious was one of the books I recall as being banned as was the movie.

Eventually the brain trust in the Church realized the folly of their edicts and stopped them.
