The rise of killer robots is now unstoppable and a new digital Geneva Convention is essential to protect the world from the growing threat they pose, according to the President of the worlds biggest technology company.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said the use of 'lethal autonomous weapon systems' poses a host of new ethical questions which need to be considered by governments as a matter of urgency.
He said the rapidly advancing technology, in which flying, swimming or walking drones can be equipped with lethal weapons systems missiles, bombs or guns which could be programmed to operate entirely or partially autonomously, "ultimately will spread to many countries".
The US, China, Israel, South Korea, Russia and the UK are all developing weapon systems with a significant degree of autonomy in the critical functions of selecting and attacking targets.
The technology is a growing focus for many militaries because replacing troops with machines can make the decision to go to war easier.

He’s wrong. Want to stop killer robots? Chop off the hands of the programmers and builders of killer robots!
I am very surprised we have not seen the rise of killer terror drones and more drone use in civilian use.
“I suggest that AK-47s will be the peoples choice.”
Yes, killer robots require us to rethink which guns we need and non-gun owners to reconsider their decision to not own a gun.
This almost sounds like fun. The satisfaction of destroying an attacker that isn’t even a human being, meaning you don’t have a murder on your conscience.
These rascals will have eyes so you need to stay out of sight when you shoot them.
Wonder if killing a killer robot will be ruled a crime.
If you want on or off the Apple/Mac/iOS Ping List, Freepmail me.
I hate futzing with computers. I use some sort of computing device daily. But I hate....no loathe, setting things things up or fixing things.
Not to worry. Just mandate the robots be hardwired with a Windows OS and they are bound to crash a third of the time.
Its Microsoft!....mankind will saved by the “Blue Screen of Death”!
us too- michigan i think it was announced a public health alert suggesting people not recreate outdoors due to the mosquito virus EEE- That’s getting pretty bad when they start issuing alerts like that-
Heck, I’d pull out of the chemical and bioweapons treaties, but that’s just me.
“STOP SHOOTING!!! WE’RE THE GOOD GUYS!!!”
“I’m sorry, Dave. I cannot do that.”
Combined PING! and DANG!, including a few preppers.
BTW, How in the h*** can anybody prep for a Machine/AI apocalypse??? BLOAT, maybe, for gun owners and enthusiasts.
Amateur or private mercenary efforts are not going to be effectively shielded from intentional electronic interference in various forms.
I’d suggest working on ways to effectively jam freelancers.
Military drones or robots would be another matter entirely, though.
Put me on your list, please. This subject es mucho interesante.
BTW, How in the h*** can anybody prep for a Machine/AI apocalypse???...
Watch The Terminator? :)
BTW, TSR, I hope you are faring ok.
My memory isn’t the best but I think it was quite recent, your loss.
I find FR a good place to come to distract when i am upset about something.
Not saying that you are, just that you are among FRiends during your time of grief.
One doesn’t have to be openly sobbing to feel grief.
I know.
Anyway, WOW did I go off course as I usually do!!!

I’m doing OK. Mom passed away on Sept. 16. Thanks for the well wishes.
To discuss this topic, I suggest one starts here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics
Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics must be obeyed, not merely observed!
An excerpt:
The Three Laws, quoted as being from the “Handbook of Robotics, 56th Edition, 2058 A.D.”, are:
First Law
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.[1]
To the stars!
I think the killer bots will be armored you will need something bigger that an AK-47 to take them on. Probably with a warhead. Of course this isn't legal for civilians right now.
The other possibility is flying ones, but a lot smaller than the current crop of military drones. With AI and facial recognition I don't think anyone is safe.
