‘Largest polar expedition in history’ to probe Arctic climate

A team of scientists from 19 countries will set off for the Arctic on Friday, aiming to freeze their ship into the polar ice for a year to research the changing climate.

Aboard the massive icebreaker Polarstern, belonging to Germany’s Alfred Wegener polar and marine research institute, researchers hope to glean new understanding of the region.

The 140 million-euro ($155 million) mission will study the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, ecosystem and natural processes — looking to build a picture of how climate change is affecting the region and the entire world.

“No other region of the world has warmed as quickly as the Arctic in the past decades,” mission leader and atmospheric scientist Markus Rex said on the “Mosaic” (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) website.

The Polarstern will be replaced by Polarstern II around the year 2020. I wonder if they are planning to “sell it to the insurance company”? Sea ice damage can be pretty bad.

It has a capacity for 124 persons, but I imagine they will have far fewer on this trip. First, think fuel and rations for a lot of people for a year. Have they even considered resupply by air?

I think they’ll use kites. Less polluting than helicopters.

“She is operational at temperatures as low as -50°C. (-58°F) Polarstern can break through ice 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) thick at a speed of 5 knots. Thicker ice up to 3 m (9.8 ft) thick can be broken by ramming.”

RV Polarstern is a medium ice breaker, heavies break ice up to 16.4 ft.

50 Let Pobedy, a Russian nuclear powered ice breaker, has an athletic/exercise facility, a swimming pool, a library, a restaurant, a massage facility, and a music salon at the crew’s disposal, crew 140. 3m ice breaks at speed of18 knots.

The US has one (1) conventionally powered heavy ice breaker - mostly not working - held together with bailing wire, duct tape, and spit.

The Artic: gets really cold in the winter and warms up somewhat in the summer. (Bill for $20 million)

As a result of their findings, they will claim that melting polar ice has completely submerged the entire Arctic land mass

It is my sincere hope that no one rescues these anti-science nitwits when are stuck there. The world would be better for it. These politically compromised liars are maligancies on civil society.

No hull specifications give.

Heavy ice breakers have double hulls and hull thickness is measured in inches

They’ve been freezing ships in the ice for years. Looks like they’ve finally figured out that the ice is still there.

Yup. Worked building ocean tugs for the north atlantic in the early 70s. More hardy hulls and warming systems for the fuel tanks.

I was thinking of that cartoon, but thinking of those scientists all dressed up in their down parkas.

Yep - maybe they should seek out any regions that have cooled....w/o that data, they’re just playing in a sandbox w/o a pail.
