Millions may risk jail as Indonesia to outlaw sex outside marriage

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia is poised to pass a new penal code that criminalizes consensual sex outside marriage and introduces stiff penalties for insulting the president’s dignity - a move rights groups criticized as an intrusive assault on basic freedoms.

Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim majority country and has substantial Christian, Hindu and Buddhist minorities, but has seen a recent trend towards deeper religious piety and conservative Islamic activism.

The new criminal code is due to be adopted in the next week after parliament and the government agreed a final draft on Wednesday, four parliamentarians told Reuters.

Lawmakers told Reuters that the new penal code, which would replace a Dutch colonial-era set of laws, was a long overdue expression of Indonesian independence and religiosity.

“The state must protect citizens from behavior that is contrary to the supreme precepts of God,” said Nasir Djamil, a politician from the Prosperous Justice Party. He said leaders of all religions had been consulted on the changes given that Indonesia’s founding ideology was based on belief in God.

Under the proposed laws, unmarried couples who “live together as a husband and wife” could be jailed for six months or face a maximum fine of 10 million rupiah ($710), which is three months’ salary for many Indonesians.

A prosecution can proceed if a village chief, who heads the lowest tier of government, files a complaint with police, and parents or children of the accused do not object. Parents, children and spouses can also lodge a complaint.

The inclusion of the new power for village chiefs was warranted because “the victim of adultery is also society”, another lawmaker, Teuku Taufiqulhadi, said.

Good luck trying to enforce such a law.
Will there be a special unit of patrol called
The Sex Police?
I can only imagine what the uniforms would look like.

I would have said instead “a recent trend towards deeper religious intolerance and Islamic fascism.” No wonder Reuters won’t hire me.

They are planning an overhaul of their current laws. They currently use the Dutch legal system that was left in place. There’s much more involved than just sex. In fact, a headline like this is close to click bait, as premarital sex is just one of many laws involved. But, Reuter’s must not think the average citizen would find ‘Indonesia to implement laws to resemble shariah’ very interesting.

Moslems have two things very right. Sex and alchol are the bane of civilized society. Although men commit the crimes, women are at the root of sex crimes. Alcohol can’t be consumed in moderation by all.

Therefore .....prohibit all.

Christians created customs, at least Queen Victoria did that reduced the illict sex. Alcohol was at times prohibited but people would not tolerate the ban.

Today Christians have eroded as ruling society and the sex problems are taken of by divorce, abortion and murder.

Most American states used to have adultry laws and anti- fornication laws. People still lived and bred, quietly.

Yes, they are correct on that. Although, much like homos, I wouldn’t make it “illegal” i.e., finable or jailable. Just shunning and shaming should be good enough.

But what is this “women are the problem” - just like Moslems tell us too?

If they ban sex outside marriage (and we all know what happens to the sex life once marriage takes place) Indonesia will have no more children born.

I believe in the morality of the argument about sex and marriage, yet I do not believe that that case can be made in secular law without religious belief becoming a de facto state religion, and in a secular sense contrary to freedom of conscience.

To me, Yeshua did not seek anyone to go change secular law. He preached that people change themselves.

I believe that if Yeshua were preaching in Indonesia (or anywhere else) today, he would not be asking people to protest in favor of a secular law banning sex before marriage. He would be preaching that people should, by their own choice, take and practice that belief themselves.
