Wake up, GOP challengers: This is Trump’s party now
New York Post ^ | September 14, 2019 | Kevin Williamson

The single most important fact of Republican life in 2019 is this: The GOP is Donald Trump’s party now.

When the GOP chose Trump as its presidential candidate in 2016, traditional Republican conservatives of the Buckley-Goldwater-Reagan school were forced to consider how far they might go to accommodate the ascendant nationalist-populist movement embodied by Trump.

Some of them took a genuinely sympathetic view of Trump partisans who feel left behind by the elite-dominated politics of Washington and hoped to articulate a new class-solidarity synthesis on the right, while others cynically believed that they could simply redirect Trump and Trumpism to their own ends.

All of them miscalculated. The question wasn’t whether there was a place for Trump in the Republican Party, but whether there remains a place for the conservatives opposed to him and his agenda.

A long, stupid run-on sentence. He gets an “F” from this English teacher.

Kevin Williamson is a uniparty statist who prefers the same infinite government control but slightly slower leftist slide than the communists.

Traditional conservative? Rockefeller Republicans are the traditional conservatives he is talking about. Which BTW, had destroyed the party to the point that they were locked out of controlling the House & Senate for decades, and only occasionally won the White House.

No thanks for the "traditional" loser conservatives, who in most cases were not even conservative at all, especially when it came to fiscal responsibility issues.

He is as close to Reagan as we have seen in 40 years.

Yes, about as close as it gets. The two best presidents in my lifetime.

I grew up in New York. My parents were involved in forming the Conservative Party. We fought the Rockefeller Republicans. I don’t think anyone would call them conservatives.

I believe he’s talking about the old Goldwater types.

Some such as Reagan should only come along once in a century at most and we got three at one time, Reagan, Thatcher, JPII. And now Trump. The nation and the world have been blessed. Can we maintain it?

He wasn't even born when Goldwater was the Republican nominee, a party interloper as far as the GOPe (all Rockefeller Republicans) were concerned. Same holds true for Reagan, who was a former Democrat supporter. Reagan was the only other conservative Republican President in my lifetime, though he too had some leftover liberal influences, and now there is President Trump. I've never read anything by Kevin that was critical of GW Bush for his dubious conservative bona-fides. Both he and pappy were both Rockefeller Republicans, which both of us agree are not conservatives by any stretch of the imagination.

So who exactly was, and still is, he pining for? Ted Cruz? By all measures he is not eligible because he is not a Natural Born Citizen. But beyond that I do not think Ted Cruz could win a national election. He almost lost to Robert Francis O'Rourke for goodness sake. Nor is he the fighter President Trump is. He would get steamrolled within a very short time in the White House, if he somehow made it there.

I could understand Kevin's non-support of Donald J. Trump before he was elected, but to continue on after seeing him in office, tells me one of two things must be the reason. #1) He can't ever admit that he was wrong, #2) Kevin is not a conservative himself. One thing I can surmise is is that Kevin is an A-Hole who needs to get over himself.

when you say “traditional conservatives”, do you mean the lying RINO/GOPe scum who always lie about how conservative they are at election time and then turn around and stab we plebs in the back who voted for them after they get elected, you know, like the Paul Ryans, Bushes, Romneys, and McCains of the world? Or are you talking about George Wills and the Bill Krystols of the the world. Because aside from those two groups I don’t know of any other “traditional conservatives”, certainly not any of that have ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING THAT’S ACTUALLY CONSERVATIVE ...

It depends on what you mean by traditional conservative.

I am for the survival of my offspring and my nation. Trump appears to be the best person to accomplish that objective.

Hugh Hewitt’s not just a Rino, he’s a deep state loving, establishment Rino.

I can’t stand the guy.

Once you’ve had a Trump you’re sure not going back to Milt Romney.

They finally chunked his buddy, Michael Medved from our local Salem RINO Network affiliate and Medved is even worse. When Hewitt’s boring globalist sellout show is done it will be even better.

I used to listen to Hugh Hewitt, in fact, was listening to him on the morning of 9/11 and he told all of us to turn on our Ty’s to see what had just happened in NYC...
But, Hugh was a DC insider and never got over himself and has moved left....so sad.
