City students who skip school for the national Climate Strike walkout next week wont be punished, Education Department officials said Thursday.
Im thankful that DOE made the decision to support our students powerful path towards change by excusing absences for the Climate Strike," said City Council Member Rafael Espinal, Jr. who urged the move at a rally with kids at city hall.
The climate crisis is not slowing down and our students arent either by leading the fight against it and we should be doing everything we can to encourage their leadership, Espinal, (D-Brooklyn) said.
Students across the city will walk out of classrooms on Sept. 20 three days before the climate summit at the UN to demand more immediate action on global warming. Teen activist and Swedish sensation Greta Thunberg, who recently docked her zero-emissions sailboat in New York, will speak at the event which will snake its way through lower Manhattan to Battery Park.

That's what really chafes my butt about this. When I was a kid I had to skip classes without any help from the school.
LOL Yeah, back when kids were men and you had to think for yourself. There’s no fun in it when there’s no risk of getting caught.
ROTFL Too true!
In the days when kids were men and fathers were the wrath of God in human form ... you had to think and think fast.
We didn’t get credit for skipping school we got character-building discredit!
Sometimes you just have to say, What the hell kind of stupid shit is this?
Hey, they invited us. We snuck in through the fire escape door. LOL Yep, it happened. Most of my senior year was a living tribute to the movie Animal House. I was so bad, my English teacher kept me after class one day to tell me the only reason why she gave my senior term paper a D- was because there was an informal discussion in the teacher's lounge about me, and it unanimous that they didn't want me back the following year, so she gave me enough of a passing grade for me to get my diploma and out of their hair. LOLOL!!!!!!!
Illegal fund with my tax money of political cannon fodder
How can this not be considered racketeering? Making children illiterate and sacrificed for this Bs
Khmer Rouge. Using illiterate kids taken out of school to be political cannon fodder.
The Tienanmen massacre was also performed by choice illiterate troops that would not be able to write about it.
When I was in HS, they let students off to protest ‘Nam...some of us went to Mendon Ponds Park and drank beer and had sex instead of protesting...I imagine this will be the trend...free day off to do what you will.
Right; these idiots don’t yet understand their “schooling” was just a ploy to transfer taxpayer wealth through unionized gubmint workers into Dem Party coffers.
More child abuse by LIB lunatics . Those they don’t abort...they abuse. Pathetic criminal LIB lunatics .
LOL
Sounds an awful lot like my senior year. (and junior and freshman) I don’t think I was there enough for them to tell me I was in detention. If our school had detention. I don’t know. I did get pretty good at foosball.
