My husband and I were living on Maui. Awakened by a phone call from a friend who told us to turn on the tv.
The skies were quiet for days.

I was on Amtrak's
Coast Starlight coming into the San Francisco Bay Area out of Seattle. I was with a group of people going to a rail conference in a suburb on the Caltrain route.
We were on the way to the dining car for breakfast when one of our group told about the attacks in New York and Washington. We're at war, I thought.
Our Oregon friends were set to fly out of Portland but couldn't in that the skies were closed. Our California counterparts were at their emergency stations. The meeting wasn't held.
It was eerie seeing no airplanes in the sky except for the fighter jets. I watched the horror unfold on CNN from the TV in my motel room.
The trip back to Seattle during the chaos was another story and probably best kept for another occasion.

All of it was just surreal. It seemed like things just kept happening...and I kept expecting an announcement that the White House was gone.
Which it could have been. Thank God for the heroes on Flight 93.

I worked at AT&T network operations....our switches were overloaded so we had to stop traffic from coming into Manhattan only allowing egress....The wallboard was lite up like a Xmas tree....We just stared at the TV monitors in disbelief.....it was horrible......

At work, one of my crew told me to come look at a TV in the lab, just about the time the second plane hit.
Went up to my office and turned on my scanner to listen to air traffic comms.
Was interesting for the rest of the day and air traffic controllers got everyone to land. One foreign sounding private pilot sis not want to do it, and the controller got really pissed.
Listened to a couple of F-16 orbiting over L.A. and what they spotted.
Felt guilty a bit later in the day as they shut down all commercial traffic. Was due to fly to Hawaii for vacation in a few days.

At home. Turned on computer and ran upstairs to turn on the tv. When the Pentagon was hit, I was worried about my brother. He's Army, but he was working with the Navy on a joint communication project and I knew he was in DC for the week, working at the Pentagon. It was a long day until we heard he was okay. He had been there in the Navy section when the plane hit. My heart just broke for all those people on the planes and in the buildings.
When my brother came out once planes were flying again, I told him we needed to immediately close the borders and deport all Muslims and let them re-apply after serious vetting. Wish we had done that.

The night of Sept 10th in Mississippi I had messed up and locked myself out of my account at Oppenheimer funds so I had to wait until the next day during working hours to get it unlocked. I went to work right before 8am CST and sat down at my desk with the TV on and called Oppenheimer at promptly 9am EST. The first plane hit the Trade Center and I was watching the TV. Oppenheimer is in the 2nd Trade Center and the lady there was helpful and I related to her what I had just seen on the TV and she said they were in the other Trade Center and safe. She helped me unlock my account and I thanked her. Shortly after the second plane hit the Tower she was in. I had just got off the phone with her. I later checked with Oppenheimer and all of the employees got out safely. Our office watched the events unwind and after both Towers fell I called all of the employees into an exam room and we prayed. I was lucky as my cousin was in the subway below the Towers when they fell and survived.
Business was slow that day as most of our clients cancelled their appointments.
