I was on Amtrak's Coast Starlight coming into the San Francisco Bay Area out of Seattle. I was with a group of people going to a rail conference in a suburb on the Caltrain route.

We were on the way to the dining car for breakfast when one of our group told about the attacks in New York and Washington. We're at war, I thought.

Our Oregon friends were set to fly out of Portland but couldn't in that the skies were closed. Our California counterparts were at their emergency stations. The meeting wasn't held.

It was eerie seeing no airplanes in the sky except for the fighter jets. I watched the horror unfold on CNN from the TV in my motel room.

The trip back to Seattle during the chaos was another story and probably best kept for another occasion.

I would imagine that the rail execs were afraid that they’d be next in the assaults!

I was in the SF area about a week later and I’ve never seen them so patriotic. Never have been since then.
