Bolton says he offered to resign night before Trump announced his firing

Outgoing national security adviser John Bolton on Tuesday disputed President Trump's account of his dismissal, tweeting that he offered to resign before the president announced his ouster.

"I offered to resign last night and President Trump said, 'Let's talk about it tomorrow,'" Bolton tweeted.

Washington Post reporter Robert Costa and other journalists said that Bolton had texted them to make clear that he resigned.

The messages came moments after Trump rocked Washington with a pair of tweets that said he had asked Bolton to step down due to disagreements about policy.

"I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning," Trump tweeted.

The president said he would name a replacement next week.

Why would Bolton OFFER TO RESIGN.

Seems he thought he was in trouble. Why else would someone do that?

he results are the same, Bolton is on the street, Trump is the President.

I usually liked Bolton, but he was a little full of himself.

Next.
...

I am NOT saying Bolton should still be there; I am not. If PDJT chose to fire him, that’s fine.

My problem is the Swamp is so big, the pool of folks PDJT has to choose from is micro-small, small, small, small...

So it sounds like Bolton offered his resignation, only to be effective if Trump decided he wanted Bolton out. Trump thought about it overnight and accepted it in the morning.

Still Pompeo and Elliot Abrams and God knows who else in there to go.

I never liked Bolton either. Not one bit. But I thought that hiring him * might * have been a good move. Because he has a reputation as being an attack dog. And that might scare a few bad actors.

But now it looks like hiring Bolton was a mistake. Now it looks like Bolton - like Mattis - was pouting because he didn’t get his way.

I didn’t read of many public disagreements with his boss. Many of these issues seem to have been rather discreetly handled despite the rumors. An advisor advises and a good one will at times disagree with the direction that the boss wants to go and show fortitude. A boss will either agree or disagree and ultimately do his own thing. So sometimes the advisor will find himself on the outs. I can’t accept the public wording on the tweets.

Trump is human and I’ll vote for him, but I’d tell Trump to his face that he was wrong in how he treated Bolton, even if he fired me afterward!

If only Trump ratcheted up a couple of wars, right?

Bolton is a “thing” only to wonks and the few idiots that still think we need 80k more troops in Afghanistan so they can be entertained from their basement command center.

I always need to remind myself that there is always information that might not be made public that factors into the event/story/. I’m sure we don’t know some of the critical details that played a part in this.

My guess is that Bolton made 1,000 (or pick any number) of suggestions to President Trump over the last X weeks, or months ... and the President overruled him on 99% of them.

Hiring Bolton to work in the Trump administration is like hiring Michael Moore as your personal trainer. It was comical -- in a pathetic kind of way -- from the start.

That happens a lot when one wants to ascertain the heart of the matter. There have been stories of officers offering resignations at the voice of their superiors’ displeasure only to have their resignations refused. Trump wanted to make a public example of Bolton over this instead of the usual,”he did great work but there was mutual realization that our directions were at variance...ect...ect..!”

I wonder if Bolton criticized Ivanka and Jared; that would have been a bad move!

I think if you offered your resignation, and you boss said no I don’t want that, but just to get the jump on you the next morning by firing you via tweet, you’d be a bit salty as well.

If that is indeed what occurred. Regardless, you serve at the pleasure of the President and like anyone else who gets hired, you were hired to make your boss look good.

Bolton can now take the job that he wanted all along ... to be a foreign policy advisor to the campaign of Joe Walsh or Mark Sanford.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that Trump is doing yeoman’s work with China and by association, China’s puppet North Korea. I agree with him on Iran as well. I just think he can be an asshole to those that work for him and I don’t think Bolton deserves to dragged through the mud. He’s a good guy who loves America.

I wonder if Trump saw this segment on Tucker Carlson’s show between last night and this morning:

WTF is going on in Washington

Have really admired John Bolton for decades and was very happy to see him join the Trump Administration.

Also very much approve of President Trumps handling of foreign affairs so far and feel that his approach is generally in line with the approach favored by John Bolton so they both should be on the same page - except that Bolton is more in favor of use of military power and Trump is more in favor of exercise of economic power.

If you really believe this, then you haven't been paying much attention over the last few years. When Trump was publicly criticizing the Obama administration over Syria, and beating Jeb Bush all over the stage in those debates over the stupid war in Iraq, he was publicly stating things that were 100% at odds with what John Bolton has been advocating in Washington for years.

I honestly never understood why Trump hired this dope in the first place.
