Six in 10 Americans say a recession is likely in the next year and as many are concerned about higher prices because of the trade war with China, helping to knock 6 points off President Donald Trumps job approval rating in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.
Trump fell from a career-high 44% approval in July to 38% now, a point off his career average, with 56% disapproving. His average rating since taking office remains the lowest on record for any modern president at a comparable point in his term, and he is the first never to have achieved majority approval.
Trump has slipped by a slight 5 percentage points specifically on his handling of the economy, from 51% approval in midsummer to 46% now. Fewer -- 35% -- approve of his handling of trade negotiations with China, and 60% are concerned that the trade dispute will raise the price of things they buy.
Ratings of the U.S. economy overall, 56% positive, are down from 65% last fall in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. Most ominously, 60% see a recession as very or somewhat likely in the next year. Thats within sight of the 69% who said so in November 2007, in advance of the Great Recession.
In another measure, Trump gets far more criticism than credit for his economic stewardship. Americans by nearly a 3-1 margin, 43-16%, say his trade and economic policies have increased rather than decreased the chance of a recession in the next year.

Sampled “adults”. Not likely voters. Not registered voters.
This is the sample most likely to get their news from a few quick glances of headlines and the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live.
For a roughly accurate poll, shift all the numbers +8 toward Trump.
You twits never had it so good. Bunch of liberal bed-wetters.
Consider the FAKE NEWS (ABC News) source. The looney liberal talking heads WANT millions of people to lose their jobs in a recession next year to give them a greater chance of winning in 2020. This is anti-American and disgusting - by a bunch of socialists and communists from the Democrat party no less.
The TRUTH is the stock market is not overvalued, commodity prices are not skyrocketing, the FED funds rate is 2.25% (not high), and the bond market is overvalued - so that means a recession in 2020 is extrermely unlikely UNLESS we have a MAJOR wildcard event - such as a major terrorist attack, major war with Iran or N. Korea, ect.
Short of this to go from 2.8% GDP over the last year to negative for 6 months (a recession) over the next year is simply wishful thinking by the communist FAKE NEWS organizations.
The relentless, intensive and focused propaganda from the left has been extremely effective in spooking the populace into thinking the sky is falling.
There is an old anecdote, supposedly attributed to President Lincoln, about the proper response to the question, “If you called a dog’s tail a leg, how many legs would a dog have?”
The correct response would be “Four”, because just because somebody CALLED a dog’s tail a leg, doesn’t make it a leg.
They called it a “recovery” when it wasn’t, between 2009 and 2016, and now they try to call it a “recession” when it CLEARLY is not.
Definitions have apparently become very fluid.
More unfit for print from the news media nothing new.
But, but the future is scary!
Bwahahahaha
Faux Poll
I see that they are going back to the 2008 playbook in trying to tank the economy just to advance their Commie Agenda.
I didn’t buy their garbage then and I am not buying it now.
After two more Fed rate cuts by the end of the year recession will be off the table.
This is what to look for in all of these polls, who they polled.
Partisan divisions 28-24-37 percent Democrats -Republicans
- independents
They polled more Dems than Republicans. It is that way in all of these polls.
Any PDJT supporter (conservative, not the same as a Republican), would hang up on them. No conservative who does answer the poll would NOT identify themselves as Independent.
The poll is statistically CRAP!!!
[[Partisan divisions 28-24-37 percent Democrats -Republicans
- independents]]
You might as well say the partisan divide in the poll was say around 50% liberal, only 24% conservative- independents usually vote democrat even though they say they are independent-
Getting rid of John Bolton should help with the base.
Like I said earlier, the media foments fear of recession with their nightly news for two weeks, then polls to see what people think. Yes, the media can move the dial a few percentage points and it’s another reason why they are corrupt.
Bolton isnt president.
In 2024, his cheerleaders are free to run him and our need to increase out interventions overseas.
What is this shite? Who believes this crap?
