UK’s Johnson to suspend Parliament as his Brexit plans stall
Associated Press ^ | September 9, 2019 | Jill Lawless and Gregory Katz

Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted Monday that a new Brexit deal can be reached to ensure Britain leaves the European Union by the Oct. 31 deadline, as he prepared to suspend Parliament and send rebellious lawmakers home until two weeks before Britain is supposed to leave the European Union.

Lawmakers used the hours before the suspension to deliver new blows to Johnson’s teetering authority. An opposition-backed measure designed to stop Britain from crashing out of the EU on Oct. 31 without a divorce deal became law after receiving the formal assent of Queen Elizabeth II. That came hours before legislators were set to reject Johnson’s demand for a snap election to break the political deadlock engulfing the government.

Meanwhile, Speaker John Bercow, whose control of business in the House of Commons has made him a central player in the Brexit drama, announced he would step down after a decade in the job.

Johnson insists Britain must leave the 28-nation EU in just over 50 days, come what may, but acknowledged that leaving without an agreement on divorce terms “would be a failure of statecraft” for which he’d be partially to blame.

On a visit to Dublin, Johnson said he would “overwhelmingly prefer to find an agreement” and believed a deal could be struck by Oct. 18, when EU leaders hold a summit in Brussels. …

These “leaders” better be careful about overturning the common man’s will.

They are greedy one world government pigs and their greed may end them 6 feet under.

I really hate the liberal media use of the loaded term “crash out” to describe the UK leaving the EU free and clear of any rule from Brussels.

Brexit is never going to happen. We’re looking at yet another delay. The fix is in, the Remainers and media are slow bleeding the process until the public grows weary and put them back in charge. It’s the same tactic the left uses in the US...keep voting until you get the result you want.

It came from the gay prime minister.

Hmmm, what about the FReepers who tell us that democracy is "mob rule" and that legislators should just ignore what the majority wants and do what they think is best for the country?

They are elitist snobs and they are wrong.

I don’t need votes for “my own good”.

And our legislators need to FORGET “polls” that are a snapshot in time.

People might POLL differently right after a mass shooting on the issue of guns.

Forget those polls.

Vote the way people expected you to vote on issues when you got elected.

I do have concerns about what “the common man” in the UK has become...

False dilemma. Democracy in the vein you just described entails changing the Constitution willy-nilly according to what the so-called majority wants, a.k.a. tyranny of the majority. There exists more than one kind of tyranny.

What fix?

Farage’s support will make a difference here.

>> Democracy in the vein you just described entails changing the Constitution willy-nilly according to what the so-called majority wants <<

There are four ways to amend the Constitution in the U.S., but none of them involve direct democracy where a majority of Americans can amend the constitution on a whim, so the type of "democracy" you just described doesn't exist in the United States. The closest thing would be amending a constitution on a STATE level by a direct majority of citizens, as is allowed in a handful of places like California. The problem there has NOT been from the majority passing crazy fringe laws, but rather the majority of people passing GOOD reforms, and activist federal judges overturning it.

>> There exists more than one kind of tyranny. <<

There exists more than one type of democracy as well. Representative democracy is not the same as direct democracy, just as a useless ceremonial figurehead monarch like Queen Elizabeth II is not the same as an Absolute Morach that directly runs his country and can do whatever they please, like the Saudi Royal Family does.

Numerous FReepers ignore the distinction between the two, however, and falsely claim that "democracy", by itself, is evil and "mob rule".

There is no delay, Oct 31st is coming and with it Brexit. Even the EU said that there has to be some change for them to grant an extension.

My God. This means she's Deep State, too.

You’re ignoring a lot to make that statement. That’s about as precise as saying a tack hammer is the same kind of tool as a pile driver.

It’s not a false comparison. Socialism has historically used representative democracy as a means of accession to power, and a means of holding on to power.

Who do you think it was who rubber-stamped royal assent on the UK’s disastrous Abortion Act of 1967?

As I understand it from someone who explained it to me, our outgoing and highly partisan speaker should have declared the bill as having required ‘Queen’s consent’ as it affects the Royal prerogative (and therefore give the PM, who wields the royal prerogative, the opportunity to veto the bill). He did not, and therefore the Royal Assent was a formality. This speaker is a disgrace who has undermined long-standing traditions, meaning it is now permissable for parliamentarians to cheer and whoop in the chamber like the audience of the Maurey Povich show, which he drank up from the remainers whilst the government brexiteers sat in stony silence. Says it all.
