Workers in the National Weather Service are 'shocked, stunned and irate' at their bosses in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for backing Trump up and claiming that he was right to say Hurricane Dorian was headed for Alabama.
In a string of baffling developments now known as 'Sharpiegate', the row centers on the president's September 1 tweet that the brutal storm was likely to hit Alabama 'harder' than expected. The NWS Birmingham office quickly issued a tweet to insist the state was not in the storm's path.
Trump then defended his statement and insist it was based on early information that had been given to him by scientists. At an Oval Office press conference on September 4, he held up an August 29 map of the storm's path to prove his point.
That map showed the storm's path as heading towards northern Florida and parts of Georgia. The original one, which had been issued by the NOAA, did not show Alabama being but but the one Trump held up had the state circled in black sharpie.
Reporters picked up on the difference and called the 'doctoring' of the map 'Sharpiegate'.

WOW! Even the astute brits missed the joke as well as the noaa employees. I hesitate to say ‘workers’.
"The President listened to NOAA? IMPEACH!
I think if folks go back to the 10 days prior....a fair number of TV weather experts in Alabama were talking over the impact of the hurricane continuing on into Alabama at a reduced level.
This is a nothing story yet ABC evening news with David Muir devoted time to it on their news a couple of days ago. Pure liberal claptrap in order to once again denigrate Trump.
You guys have a flippin agenda.
You could have issued an update to the president afterward and he could have updated the public
As it is, not particularly good forecasters anyway
This is stupid. It’s not as if the chances of Alabama being hit by what was then a Cat 5 hurricane were zero on September 1st.
The left is grasping at straws and them complaining theyre made of plastic.
fantastic
Never mind that the Emergency Management system and the Red Cross were activated in Alabama as well as the military bases in the state put on alert.
I’d like to update everyone about my previous post:
“As it is, You Are Not particularly good forecasters anyway”
Plastic fantastic.
Wasnt it settled science that the hurricane would hit Florida with the highest hurricane winds ever recorded?
As the Hurricane approached the Bahamas and Florida the tracking forecasts took it across the state of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico and possibly hitting Alabama or, tracking along the East Coast of Florida going northward. Trump as usual was right on his game!!! Media looked like the butt holes they always are!!! Maybe Biden can help them...he thinks Vermont is really New Hampshire or, is it the other way around!!! LMAO!!!
” ..Hurricane Dorian was headed for Alabama...”
For pete’s sake - it’s a matter of record; there was TV early on TV broadcasts showing the eye of the storm crossing Florida into the Gulf of Mexico and a projected cone into the Alabama/Mississippi area. Look it up!!!
The weather guessers love the internet because they can continuously update their guesses to make their guessing appear more reliable.
Incorrect. At this point they were told to stand down. When you look at what the forecastd winds were and what the track was along that forecast - emergency managers would have been briefed at the local level (at least two days before - no problem - stand down the CAT and stop all checklists. I did this for 30 years and I'm DSCA level 1 and 2 certified. I completed FEMA courses 100, 200, 700 and 800 and I'm also a certified incident commander.
This is the location of Dorian (with the track it has made since overlayed) for advisory #33 on 1 Sept, at 11 AM EDT.
This is the FORECASTED wind field straight from the OFFICIAL NHC advisory at it's closest approach to Alabama - in 72 hours - valid for 4 Sept at 11 AM EDT -
No forecaster in their right mind would have told an IC to keep the CAT stood up in Alabama given this info - NONE.
Air Traffic Contract them.
