Mexico announces 56 percent drop in number of migrants arriving at US border

The Mexican government announced Friday that the number of migrants coming to its border with the U.S. had dropped by 56 percent over the past three months as the country tries to avert President Trump's threatened tariffs on Mexico's exports to its northern neighbor.

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, citing data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the number of migrants apprehended at the frontier in August was 63,989 in August, down from 146,266 in May. Those numbers included people who presented themselves at U.S. ports of entry and were deemed inadmissible.

The Mexican government has deployed more than 20,000 police officers and National Guard troops across the country as part of an aggressive campaign meant to deter Central American migrants from passing through its territory en route to the United States. Ebrard said there had been seven formal complaints of human rights violations involving the National Guard, a relatively low number which he saw as another sign of success.

The U.S. and Mexico agreed in June to a 90-day window to allow Mexico to reduce the flow of migrants from Central America to the U.S. The agreement averted plans by Trump to impose a five percent tariff on Mexican goods in the U.S. that would have increased every month until it hit 25 percent.

Ebrard, is scheduled to meet with U.S. officials at the White House Tuesday to review the Mexican government's progress.

"We're showing that the strategy that Mexico put forward has been successful," Ebrard told reporters. "I don't expect a tariff threat Tuesday because it wouldn't make sense."

While drops in migration are typical during the summer months, officials denied any link between the drops in migration and seasonal trends.

This is the most effective measure taken so far.

President Trump seems to have found the right lever to get results from the Mexican Government.

Mexico is able to do what it takes (63,989 in August, down from 146,266 in May). "There had been seven formal complaints of human rights violations involving the National Guard, a relatively low number". Imagine if we had one.

Well, they *do* have schools and world class universities in Mexico.

Washington Examiner reports (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/mexico-boosts-deportation-of-migrants-heading-to-us-63):

“Mexico has boosted deportations by 63% so far this year.

La Prensa, the main newspaper in Honduras, quoted the Guatemalan Migration Institute which said that 102,314 Central American migrants from the countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua have been deported from Mexico to Guatemala. In the same period last year, the number was 62,746.

The Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, in analyzing the report, said, “The summer months in Mexico have witnessed large increases and improvements of border security, interior enforcement, and deportations of migrants.””...

“They (Mexico) have deported more citizens of those four Central Americans in the last eight months than we (USA) deported all of last year. They are doing a job that Congress and illegal immigration enthusiasts don’t want our agencies to do.”

I would be more interested in hearing from Mexico regarding how many immigrants have tried to cross their Southern border since the clamp down began a couple of months ago when they assigned 25,000 troops to the problem.

“President Trump seems to have found the right lever to get results from the Mexican Government.”

Who doubted Trump’s threat of escalating tariffs would bring results? We import over 80% of all of Mexico’s exports. By Mexico in effect putting all its eggs in one export basket it has made itself extremely vulnerable to the strategy Trump has utilized.

You’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s all about the money”?

This is a great example.

“Summer heat?”

Seems much more than seasonal variation.

In the first month, I saw data that indicated it was a 13% percent drop, seasonally adjusted.

It has moved markedly down since then, so the seasonally adjusted drop is likely more impressive now.

Some other data in post #9.

Imagine that. Border jumper numbers dropped during the hottest months of the year. Happens every year. No one wants to wander around the desert in triple digits temperatures.

Trump is marching through Congress like Sherman through GA.

He has gotten his emergency money to build the wall. He has gotten NAFTA canceled, and now is using that to pressure Me-Hee-Co to stop immigration on their side.

The wall is going up big time in AZ, CA, TX, and NM, and Trump has stated there will be 500 mi up by 2020.

Meanwhile, the DemoKKKrats are “investigating.”

I guess I would have to ask the question. Where did these people get picked up to be deported. Northern or southern border? The northern would be a target rich environment and now that these numbers have been picked through, lets see what the numbers are once the fall rush starts

“Where did these people get picked up to be deported. Northern or southern border?”

The article reports it as “across the Country”.

They say, “Authorities have raided freight trains that migrants ride north, and pulled thousands off buses and out of the freight compartments of trucks. The government has warned bus and taxi drivers they could lose their permits if they transport migrants.”

I know that there was an operation to establish a police cordon across the narrowest part of the Mexican isthmus (Oaxaca and Veracruz - the town of Coatzacoalcos has been a hot spot), where there were a limited number of roads paralleling the coasts (with a rugged inland). They established some regular inspection points on the main roads, and have been playing cat and mouse on the back roads down there.

A lot of migrants had been driven back to hitching a ride on the freight train, nicknamed “La Bestia” (the Beast), as used to be common, before the organized caravans, and the traffickers started charter bus service. The Government now clears the trains off as well, pretty far South.
