Beijing folds on Hong Kong extradition law, but the genie is out of the bottle

After lots of growling from Beijing about how the communist regime wouldn't 'sit on its hands' over the massive protests disrupting Hong Kong, and new threats to 'show no mercy' to the protesters, the Chicoms have folded. >

Hong Kong's Beijing-appointed puppet leader, Carrie Lam, has withdrawn the extradition bill that triggered the protests, the one that permitted Beijing to freely snatch back anyone who displeases Red China to face what passes for 'justice' in the communist dictatorship.

According to the New York Times:

HONG KONG — Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive, said Wednesday that the government would withdraw a contentious extradition bill that ignited months of protests in the city, moving to quell the worst political crisis since the former British colony returned to Chinese control 22 years ago.

The move eliminates a major objection among protesters, but it was unclear if it would be enough to bring an end to intensifying demonstrations, which are now driven by multiple grievances with the government.

“Incidents over these past two months have shocked and saddened Hong Kong people,” she said in an eight-minute televised statement broadcast shortly before 6 p.m. “We are all very anxious about Hong Kong, our home. We all hope to find a way out of the current impasse and unsettling times.”

Her decision comes as the protests near their three-month mark and show little sign of abating, roiling a city known for its orderliness and hurting its economy.

It is a striking concession from Beijing. But like most everyone analyzing this, it's probably too little, too late.

History should tell us that tha Communists do not hesitate to pull the trigger on their own people. Think of Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, and if we make the mistake to elect Bernie or Warren, we can expect a bloodbath in the Fruited Plains. Bloodlust is a Communist nature. Tianamin Square or Katyn Forest is all the same to them.

I’m no friend of China, but I do think this move now gives them the pretext to move in, should the protests continue. The people of Hong Kong need to be careful now...

Now she has to quit.

Wouldn’t you think she got permission to do withdraw the bill?

I wouldn’t have thought she initiated the bill without urging from Beijing, and now the withdrawal would seem to be something they allowed for now.

Hong Kong’s leadership isn’t that autonomous is it?

Hong Kong’s leadership isn’t that autonomous is it?

Definitely not. This was either Beijing’s idea, or Carrie Lam asked permission, presumably incurring some future obligations before getting it.

——Wouldn’t you think she got permission to do withdraw the bill?-—

My first thought was that she was told to withdraw the bill

Just immediately north of Hong Kong are the recent heavily populated areas of the Pearl River Delta. The cities there are where the “If you build it they will come” construction took place and people did in fact come. This area of 68 million people (per Forbes) is the 13th richest economy in the world.

The CCP cannot tolerate the Hong Kong disease breaking out in the adjacent Pearl River Delta territory with so many new and relatively well off young people. It is these same people, I believe, that will likely be affected by the American Tariffs.

The Hong Kong executive is a virtual puppet. He/She cannot make important decisions without the approval from Beijing.

Agree - on stuff like that, China calls all the shots. She’s powerless, as would be anyone in that position.

If the bill is actually removed from consideration, it is a big deal.

China is in a tight spot here, because they need the access Hong Kong gives them. Many wealthy party members have millions and billions invested in Hong Kong as a safe haven.

None of them want the same system in Hong Kong as in the rest of China. It erases the safety of their holdings there.

As for pushing for more...

The Chinese Communist Party can only be pushed so far. Take what you can get, which is restoration of the status quo before the protests.

Thanks. That would have been my take, but I don’t follow along the leadership and it’s connections to Beijing as closely as I probably should.

When an entire hospital staff joins the protest, the Genie is definitely out of the bottle. I wonder if we are seeing another collapse like the Berlin wall?

Thanks. That would have been my take as well, but then I haven’t followed the leadership’s connections to Beijing closely enough to address it with total confidence.

Well, we still have the matter of JUSTICE.

The murderer who caused this entire brouhaha by killing his girlfriend in Taiwan and fleeing to HK, still can’t be tried in Hong Kong.

Something has got to be done to see that he is tried. I guess it will require a one time deal to extradite him to Taiwan to face justice there.

The Communists would do the same thing here in the US if they could. My fear is that with the radicalization of the Dems, they might be able to do it. And so goes the last best hope.

....
If the chinese army intervenes then the concept of one nation two systems dies. As a result the US will cut the hong kong dollar from its US dollar peg.

That will result in a collapse in the hong kong dollar. The chinese can prop it up —but it will cost them.

I think the bandits who run the CCP are afraid that if they move on Hong Kong then President Trump will use that as a handy excuse to impose a total trade embargo on them. Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s already said as much to their ambassador.

When I visited China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan several years back, just before China took control of Hong Kong, I thought the move may eventually backfire on China. The people of Hong Kong and Taiwan have had many years of freedom. It would take a great deal of force to just subdue them. It is more likely they would spread the idea of freedom the more they interacted with the mainland Chinese.
