A doctor and medical ethicist argues life after 75 is not worth living (Ezekiel Emanuel keeps at it)
MIT Technology Review ^ | August 21, 2019 | Stephen S. Hall

In October 2014, Ezekiel Emanuel published an essay in the Atlantic called “Why I Hope to Die at 75.” Because Emanuel is a medical doctor and chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s department of medical ethics and health policy, as well as a chief architect of Obamacare, the article stirred enormous controversy.

Emanuel vowed to refuse not only heroic medical interventions once he turned 75, but also antibiotics and vaccinations. His argument: older Americans live too long in a diminished state, raising the question of, as he put it, “whether our consumption is worth our contribution.”

Emanuel was born into a combative clan. One brother, Rahm, recently completed two terms as the controversial mayor of Chicago; another brother, Ari, is a high-profile Hollywood agent. But even given his DNA, Emanuel’s death wish was a provocative argument from a medical ethicist and health-care expert.

Emanuel, now 62, talked with me about the social implications of longevity research and why he isn’t a fan of extending life spans. I was particularly curious to get his reaction to several promising new anti-aging drugs.

These people who live a vigorous life to 70, 80, 90 years of age—when I look at what those people “do,” almost all of it is what I classify as play. It’s not meaningful work. They’re riding motorcycles; they’re hiking. Which can all have value—don’t get me wrong. But if it’s the main thing in your life? Ummm, that’s not probably a meaningful life.

Apparently the evil doctor also wants the authority to define what is a meaningful life. The arrogance of such people. Maybe he should be relieved of existence as I find no meaning in his life.

Emanuel, now 62, talked with me about the social implications

Where you stand depends on where you sit.

When I was an intern, it was very common to hear my peers say, "I would never want to live "like that".

After a few months, it became clear to me that most PEOPLE "like that" did, in fact, want nothing more than to keep living.

45 years of clinical practice under my belt has only reinforced that observation.

The question of PAYING for "living like that" with other people's money is a separate issue. Is it "worth living" after 75? Almost certainly.

Is it worth the people across the street going into debt to send their kid to college IN ORDER FOR you to "live like that"?

That's the issue.

Your comment can be boiled down to just three words:

“Only Lefties hate - - “

This creep is so hate filled he is in essence suicidal if he wants to die a 75. Many people older than that are very healthy, look good, and both physically and mentally active. My neighbor is 96 and just now slowing down physically due to bad knees.

Life is what you make of it, if your genetics are OK to begin with. Eat and exercise good, stay away from drugs, and above all keep a good positive attitude. The left loses out in attitude and wind up hating everyone, including themselves.

Liberals are such sad loathsome creatures. They are bereft of joy and confused about everything. This guy is a classic dangerous liberal.

Is he going to put his mom’s head on the chopping block first? If we don’t end abortion, and return the sanctity of human life, this is coming.

“...“whether our consumption is worth our contribution.”...”
If that is the criteria, we rightfully can off the vast majority of our politicians.

And NEA members.

the question of, as he put it, “whether our consumption is worth our contribution.”

Does the same rule apply to a segment of the population that hang out on the streets of LA, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, etc. regardless of age?

That aside, I watched medical technology torture my F-I-L for two years keeping him alive at incredible expense and in pain. So, in some sense, I do agree with some of what he is saying.

BUT!

It was not my call to decide what treatments my F-I-L got. It was his, and he chose every available treatment. Even with the horrible quality of life that it produced (again my perception of Q-O-L, not his). His experience will not be forgotten when I find myself in his position some day.

Then, what will I decide? Don't know.

There are artists, musicians, philosophers, scientists, engineers, authors who are over 75 and productive. This jackass has a deep psychological problem and must hate himself.

He’s an aging fag with no family of his own, that’s his reference point.

OF COURSE his views are going to be at least a little nihilist.

This is why it is important to keep physically fit. When these fascists come for you, when you are fearing for your life, you can end theirs. Self-defense is acceptable .

From 1960 through 1980 the specter of aggressive often inappropriate malpractice lawyering took from ethical physicians the discretion from making difficult but correct decisions regarding the care of seriously ill people. Also the fact that individuals and families were no longer personally responsible for the financial costs of prolonged ,futile care or are influenced by unabashed, now socially accepted quackery has led to even greater demands for such care. Those decisions both by the physician and the patient are complex and difficult under the best of circumstances. One thing is certain. Would not want the likes of Dr. Emmanuel writing “guidelines” with the force of law on how to make those decisions.

Perhaps without all the vaccinations and antibiotics the Doctor will find life not so diminished...

He'll probably end up living an extra twenty years!

You live to serve the State and at 75 you must die to serve the State.

Bingo! In his world, that is the case. Boxer, in "Animal Farm" agrees.
