In October 2014, Ezekiel Emanuel published an essay in the Atlantic called Why I Hope to Die at 75. Because Emanuel is a medical doctor and chair of the University of Pennsylvanias department of medical ethics and health policy, as well as a chief architect of Obamacare, the article stirred enormous controversy.
Emanuel vowed to refuse not only heroic medical interventions once he turned 75, but also antibiotics and vaccinations. His argument: older Americans live too long in a diminished state, raising the question of, as he put it, whether our consumption is worth our contribution.
Emanuel was born into a combative clan. One brother, Rahm, recently completed two terms as the controversial mayor of Chicago; another brother, Ari, is a high-profile Hollywood agent. But even given his DNA, Emanuels death wish was a provocative argument from a medical ethicist and health-care expert.
Emanuel, now 62, talked with me about the social implications of longevity research and why he isnt a fan of extending life spans. I was particularly curious to get his reaction to several promising new anti-aging drugs.

Jimmy Page is 76 w/ his 28 year old poet Girlfriend Scarlet Sabet
You know he’ll change his tune when HE hits 75.
I’ll be 76 in a few weeks. Should I crawl into a hole and die?
Your right about the mindset, but it could be that people think it’s more about physical age itself, at least I thought so. “Never trust anybody over 30” was also a mantra at the time.
I gave up on The Who after Quadraphenia. Good vocal scream by Roger on Love Reign Down On Me, but over all too depressing.
I don’t know what you mean when you say, “people like him should of course be spared”. Are you thinking he is garnering support for an end of life program? I didn’t get that impression.
When you can't serve their interests any more, they want you to die quickly, so the next generation can then be enslaved.
And they call themselves compassionate?
Now, do I think Zeke always wanted death panels etc (but not for him and his ilk)? He doesn't strike me as smart enough to fully think through such an evil genius plan. But is he a useful idiot....?
Townshend said The Who was a "spent force" creatively after Quadrophenia, and in general he's right. The Quadrophenia Tour of 2012-13 was perhaps their best post-Moon tour; The Rock live was a borderline religious experience. They remained - and remain - an outstanding live act.
True, but Townshend still had a backlog of songs from the "Lifehouse" project, "Slip Kid" (one of my all-time favorite Who songs, is one of them)
That said, you can line up Who By Numbers with Presence, and Who Are You with In Through The Out Door as later albums by the top bands of the 1970s that were ok, and at times stellar (Achilles Last Stand is Zeppelin's best IMHO) but not quite as good as a comprehensive work as prior efforts.
And they should all be denied healthcare, those aging wankers.
"Music Must Change" is another great song.
LOL! Nah. They were DC gals. We didn't have either until after they were too old to drive from the retirement home. Finally got a Wawa near Dupont Circle, but no Sheetz in the entire Swamp.
Great song. The original “party line” on why Keith doesn’t play drums in that tune was that he couldn’t play 6/8 time. The fact is there are plenty of “odd meter” songs in The Who’s catalog (Love Reign O’er Me is in 6 or 12); Keith was just a mess during The Who Are You recording sessions. But there was a 2-week stretch where he could function and that’s when they locked down the drums. Even then he’d lost his brilliance and a little of his regular mojo - in Who Are You on the last verse he sticks completely to the ride cymbal vs high-hat, and you can hear a little confusion on his part early in the verse as to whether he wants to stick with ride or HH. Zeke would approve.
I have to agree with you. I just went passed no.81 and I feel great. However, things are starting to slow down a bit and that frustrates me a little.
I think you are right, but I only read a snippet of the article so I didn’t come away with the death panels and all that. Psychologically, I think you nailed the thinking behind how they move an agenda forward. Inch by inch... and that is what they think progress is all about.
My favorites of The Who are the songs “Won’t get Fooled Again” and the fist track from “Live at Leeds.” Live at Leeds is a great album — one of the best live albums for starkness and energy.
Looks like the nation has acquired another overlord. Human life has now been reduced to a variable commodity on an economics graph.
I’m glad for your happiness and healthy attitude.
I see you are a Vietnam Vet living in VA. After Vietnam they sent me to Arlington, where I met my wife of 48 years.
Best of luck and health to you.
Health and happiness to you too...
Welcome home.
At least they were both Senators.
