Oh, I'm not saying everything after 1973 was crap. I went through a Who By Numbers phase where I thought However Much I Booze was a masterpiece. I think Sister Disco and The Quiet One (and of course Who Are You) are great studio and live pieces.

"Music Must Change" is another great song.

Great song. The original “party line” on why Keith doesn’t play drums in that tune was that he couldn’t play 6/8 time. The fact is there are plenty of “odd meter” songs in The Who’s catalog (Love Reign O’er Me is in 6 or 12); Keith was just a mess during The Who Are You recording sessions. But there was a 2-week stretch where he could function and that’s when they locked down the drums. Even then he’d lost his brilliance and a little of his regular mojo - in Who Are You on the last verse he sticks completely to the ride cymbal vs high-hat, and you can hear a little confusion on his part early in the verse as to whether he wants to stick with ride or HH. Zeke would approve.
