Five takeaways from Justice IG report on Comey
The Hill ^ | 8/29/2019 | Olivia Beavers

The Justice Department watchdog unveiled a report Thursday rebuking former FBI director James Comey over his handling of memos detailing his conversations with President Trump, saying he violated FBI policies.

The report from DOJ Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz rebutted Comey’s claims that the memos were merely personal recollections, not official FBI records, and sharply criticized the former FBI chief for mishandling sensitive information.

While highly critical of Comey’s actions, the inspector general did not make recommendations on whether the former top government official should face any charges, and Attorney General William Barr has declined to prosecute him.

The watchdog report has reverberated throughout Washington, thrusting Comey — a figure who has long drawn ire from members of both parties over his work at the FBI during the 2016 election — back into the political fray.

Here are five takeaways surrounding the release of the 83-page IG report:

Report gives Trump ammunition

The scathing inspector general report supplied fresh fodder for President Trump and his GOP allies, who have long alleged malfeasance by top members of the Justice Department and FBI during the 2016 election.

These fervent critics now have an independent government watchdog publicly confirming that Comey violated FBI policies and his employment agreement with the bureau when he decided to give memos to a friend in the hopes they would be shared with the media.

That’s what got me about this report. The IG said he didn’t leak classified material to the media. So if you use a proxy, you’re all good?

WHY do they even waste the TIME and the immense amounts of MONEY on ANY of these so called INVESTIGATIONS when they always result in NO ONE ever being INDICTED or PROSECUTED?

No need to answer.. it was a rhetorical question.

Thanx Bill Barr, you phony.

You got that right!

And on top of that Trump's latest tweet says:

Donald J. Trump ‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump 1h1 hour ago

The fact that James Comey was not prosecuted for the
absolutely horrible things he did just shows how fair and
reasonable Attorney General Bill Barr is.
So many people and experts that I have watched and read would
have taken an entirely different course.
Comey got Lucky!

No, it's not the use of proxy that saves his bacon, it's that the people doing the classification did so after the fact, and saw to it that none of the material Comey gave to Richman to give to the NYT could be a criminal leak. The people doing the after the fact classification review were Strzok, Page, Rybicki, and one other "inside the coup" player.

Singling Comey out for the common practice of FBI leaking (when caught, inevitably prosecution is declined) would in fact be selective prosecution.

DOJ Declined to Prosecute Deputy Assistant Director of FBI Who Made Illegal Leak - May 31, 2019

Misconduct at Justice Department isn't always prosecuted - September 10, 2014

FBI Use of Exigent Letters - January 2010 (illegal spying on citizens)

OVERSIGHT: RESTORING CONFIDENCE IN THE FBI - June 2001 (FBI has been totally corrupt for a long time)

It's good to be king.

I suppose in a banana republic this all is normal but for us, this is really demoralizing.

That's what you get for believing the fairy tale in the first place. The US has been a glorified banana republic for longer than any of us has been alive.

I’m too cynical to buy into that. Every next event is the ‘main event’, ‘the big one’...only to be let down time after time.

Careful you can get labeled a #NeverTrumper for posting negative comments like that. </s>

No one is going to be brought up on charges until the case is so slam-dunk that a jury of 12, partially selected by a billion dollar (funded by Soros, so maybe muti-billion dollar) Dream Team of defense lawyers, will absolutely convict...all 12 of them withou one single exception.

Why so high a bar? Because if you indict and bring charges, and the perp is let off - even on a technicality, let alone by Left-Wing jury nullification (remember O.J.?), then we are FAR worse off then if charges are never brought. Them the likes Comey and all the others are EXONERATED and they become completely justified in their actions.

You think no indictments are bad. Try exoneration of their actions on for size. You can’t just indict. You MUST win convictions or you are far worse off then when you started.
