Kevin O’Leary, wife should ‘do the time’ if guilty in boat crash: brother of man killed

The brother of one of the victims killed in a collision with Kevin O’Leary‘s boat says if the “Shark Tank” star or his wife are found guilty of wrongdoing, “they’ve got to do the time.”

Larry Poltash said he’s searching for answers in the death of his younger brother, Gary Poltash, who was killed instantly in the crash Saturday night on Lake Joseph in Ontario.

He told the Toronto Sun that while he hopes it was all an accident, O’Leary and his wife, who was driving the boat at the time, should be held accountable if it wasn’t.

“Except the boat they struck apparently had no running lights, and no lights on at all in the dead of night.”

According to a passenger on the boat traveling at speed that hit the other boat.

Do we know which boat was struck in the port side?

It’ll be interesting to see what the investigation shows. The other boat’s status hasn’t been clearly defined.

I’m assuming she was underway IF it indeed left the scene. If she had been anchored then only require 1 all around white light (assuming smaller vessel.

I could easily see someone overlooking a single white light on a small anchored vessel if they were distracted.

Admiralty claims are always interesting to suss out.

“Or was O’Leary driving, took off long enough for his wife to take the wheel, return to the scene and tell the cops that she was driving?”

This.

FME women don’t like piloting boats, particularly at night. So he was probably drunk and at the helm. OTOH, he could be saying this to limit his liability in case of a lawsuit. All I know is at night the running lights have to be on otherwise it’s really hard to see boats and judge their distance. The water is dark so nothing reflects off the boat.

Note that Kevin O’Leary is also a Canadian “Trump-style” conservative - brash, unapologetic, & outspoken - so he’s got LOTS of leftist enemies up here just looking to smear him ... bear that in mind

He’s also fully cooperated with the police, something the guilty don’t usually do ... the cops will sort it out

That being said, O’Leary is rich - really rich, like over $100 million - and if I had that kind of money, I’d definitely be spending a couple thousand on a good radar system if I did any boat travel at night

Cheaping out on personal safety is idiotic

There was a similar accident here years ago. Apparently, the investigators looking at the wreck could determine whether the lights were on at the time of the crash by examining the wrecked bulbs.

You can. Hot tungsten filaments will oxidize in a particular way when they are exposed to air while hot. Once the glass envelope is broken, such as in a crash, if the filaments are lit, they will quickly combine with oxygen. If they are not, they will look the same as they normally do when looking through the glass of the envelope.

I find this inarguable. If Mr. or Mrs. O’Leary is guilty of a crime, he or she should pay whatever penalty the law designates. It’s so boring that statements of tautologies are “news.”

Nowadays, the elites don't necessarily "do the time".

So there's that.

Claiming that the boat they’d rammed “fled the scene” is rather disingenuous, as if a boat with a fatality aboard had something to hide. How would they know fleeing from their blasting into and through it, in the dark?

If the stricken boat with the fatality aboard had thought to try to get to medical care more quickly, what would this mean?

Casting aspersions upon the owners of the boat they’d rammed? Sounds lawyered up to me, that or they’re just assholes.

The larger boat was a 13 passenger had 8 on board. Dr was driving the boat. One killed instantly, one woman serious injured later died and 2 or 3 others hospitalized. He probably left for help. The Oleary boat was driving bow up may not have seen other boat or it’s lights and was later found at resort.

True, but that they should still goes without saying.

It’s pretty absurd that an appearance on a reality TV program should put someone into an “elite,” get away with (hypothetically, not offering an opinion on the facts) manslaughter, category. Just crazy.

Took a tour of the FBI building in DC when I was a kid 50 years ago. The agent giving the tour said that they could tell if a car’s headlights were on or not at the time of an accident.
