For once, I agree with President Donald Trump.
At a rally on Aug. 15, he addressed the epidemic of gun violence in the United States by saying, “It’s not the gun that pulls the trigger, it’s the person holding the gun.” He then went off onto the now predictable tangent of proposing the development of new psychiatric hospitals to keep people with mental illness from being “that person.”
I am a retired psychiatrist who has evaluated and treated people with every known psychiatric disorder and who has interviewed and prepared comprehensive assessments of convicted felons. I can tell you that Mr. Trump is right about our need to focus on the person who pulls the trigger, but completely wrong about people with broadly defined mental illness being responsible for gun violence in America.

Typical gun-grabber load of horsecrap. I have guns not because I want to kill someone, but because I want to be able to fend off someone who wants to harm me. I have had one defensive firearm use in my life, and I didn't have to even point Mr. Mossberg at the home invader - he saw I was armed and ran out the door. Liberals refuse to accept armed self-defense as a right, so they write crap like this.
Fix the HIPPA laws so the mentally ill are flagged on background checks!!!!!
Fix the laws prohibiting the tracking of the crimes of minors!!!!
Those are the ONLY "loopholes" needing fixed.

When will people realize that the idiotic practice of “mainstreaming” the mentally ill is not a good idea and has proven to have a very deleterious impact on society?
He’s a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists now think there is not a mental issue involved when a man presents himself as a woman. Psychiatrists also believe energetic young boys should be given hard prescription drugs to keep them still and quiet in class so the teacher won’t have to put out any effort. All psychiatrists do these days is prescribe mind altering drugs and write inane articles.
The logic above is convoluted. For example:
The penis is present for one thing: impregnating a female. Given that fact, we must accept that possession of a penis defines the owner's intent.
Similar "logic", but completely misleading unless one believes all men are only thinking of impregnating every female.
My handgun has never gotten up, loaded a magazine, inserted said magazine into itself and shot the FedEx person at the door.
If everyone who owns an AR15 was bent on killing somebody, there would not be anyone left.
This guy is the poster child for therapists being more nuts than those they “treat”.

This guy twists facts stats and logic into a tautology of false conclusion that would strip any law-abiding person of the fundamental right to choose how and with what to defend themselves.
Perhaps he ought to look at the actual stratification of those responsible for the homicides he wishes to reduce and tell us exactly how 99.99% of them are committed by career thugs and criminals and are swept along out of sight and soundbite of the media. Would he say that our rate of handgun homicide ought to be reduced by removing those who committed them from society?

So, time to disarm the police and military? I'm sure the doctor would disagree. And probably have a pat explanation as to why.
