We cannot undo America's sordid history, but we can at least take down the monuments glorifying it. In the wake of the recent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville against the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue, confederate monuments are coming down all over the country. Protesters in Durham, North Carolina toppled a statue put up by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1924. The mayor of Baltimore had the city's Confederate statues removed under the cloak of night. And yesterday, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams called for the 90 foot bas relief sculpture of three Confederate generals to be blasted off the face of Stone Mountain.
"It is 2017, and now is the time for us to have a conversation about removing the last vestiges of that type of hatred and that type of vitriol toward minority communities in Georgia," Abrams told local news.
In response to calls like Adams', right-wing sites began rhetorically asking, What's next, blowing up Mount Rushmore? But given the racist history that both Stone Mountain and Mount Rushmore share, is there something more to that question than alarmism alone?

Maybe Stacey Abrams is angling for a VP slot (if the nominee for President is a white male) by saying things like this. The Democratic ticket definitely won’t be two white males and may require at least one POC.
Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life ...
Yep, Rushmore, and the Encyclopedia Brittanica, and all the history books that mention anyone they dislike; i.e., anyone to the right of Stalin or less batty than George III.
Orwell’s 9194: Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
Since Michelle Obama said during the 2012 campaign Barack has a lot of work to do to change our history and tradition, the Democrats have taken that up as their goal for the reason given above.
don’t lose all hope. Alabama passed a law which basically guarantees that no monuments will be taken in Alabama. The last stand for freedom will definitely be in Alabama.
Now that is what I call a mountain.
ALL DEMONRATS ARE TERRORISTS!!!
To Stacy Abrams - your hate is unbecoming. Your self-righteousness is suffocating.
Erasing history is forgetting history. And if we forget our history, we are doomed to repeat it.
Leave Mt. Rushmore alone. Leave Stone Mountain alone. Baltimordor is wrong to do what it did. Ditto the toppling of the statue.
Stacey Abrams is an idiot of the first order. Why is anyone ANYONE listening to a word she says? Because she was a “candidate”? Please...
The ultimate goal of lefty lunatics like Stacy Abrams, is to blast white people off the face of the earth, not just art depicting white people.
I’m telling ya man when DaBlahBlahBlah talked about possibly removing the Columbus statue, we went INSANE.
Mailed and called saying that would be a bad day for cops and Americans of Italian descent here.
And then a Staten Island politician said we’d take it if they took it down.
He got scared of the lost votes and backed down.
But that is a great law that Alabama passed.
It was easier to keep the Columbus statue than the confederate ones as it was pre US.
From Wikipedia:
"The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. are both named for Wilson. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is a non-profit that provides grants for teaching fellowships...One of Princeton's six colleges is named Wilson College. Numerous schools, including several high schools, bear Wilson's name. Several streets, including the Rambla Presidente Wilson in Montevideo, Uruguay, have been named for Wilson. The USS Woodrow Wilson, a Lafayette-class submarine, was named for Wilson. Other things named for Wilson include the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Washington, D.C., and the Palais Wilson, which serves as the headquarters of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. Monuments to Wilson include the Woodrow Wilson Monument in Prague.
And while the Wikipedia page for Wilson has a section dedicated to things named after Wilson, there is an entire stand-alone page for the Exalted Cyclops: List of places named after Robert Byrd
When the left starts talking about renaming some of these things, then I'll be ready to discuss the legacy of racism.
LOL!
In truth, there's no difference at all... If your not entitled to your own history then why should you be allowed to prosper from what it has given you.? Why should you get to keep what you have earned.??
Soon we will have all the same problems with them as we do the stinking muslams...
I thought Mr. Rushmore was just a set for a Hitchcock movie. Are you telling me it really exists?
Gee, I didn't know that slaves built Mount Rushmore. /sarcasm
She talks about Gutzon Borglum's correspondence with the KKK's Grand Dragon, yet she fails to mention that the Democrat Party not only founded the KKK, but that Democrat Senator Robert Byrd started the KKK chapter in West Virginia, and remained in it long enough to be voted in as Exalted Cyclops. The only reason he left the KKK was because he decided to run for the House of Representatives in the early 50's, and someone probably advised him that it wouldn't be beneficial to his political future if he belonged to the group.
And she talks about the land Mt. Rushmore is on being taken from the indigenous people. But she obviously doesn't know, or chooses not to mention the fact that a piece of land which had been bought and paid for in 1825 by the A.M.E. Zion Church, and developed into an African American community, was confiscated in 1856 through eminent domain by the City of New York so they could build Central Park. And gee, in 1856, there happened to be a Democrat Mayor of the the City...Charles Godfrey Gunther, who served from 1864-66. And there would continue to be Democrat Mayors of New York City until January 1, 1873. According to the following article: "The city paid landowners, though many found the payment inadequate, and renters were displaced without compensation. There are few records of where residents went after their eviction and the community was destroyed."
Seneca Village: The Black Community That Was Destroyed to Create Central Park
Where's her racist rants about that? I hate writers who only choose to selectively report the history they think proves their point. But in this case, the only point is the one on Bethy Squires' head.
