Power of Social Media: Turns average Chicken Sandwich into star
South Florida Sun Sentinel ^ | 8/25/2019 | Michael Mayo

The food world is going cuckoo over Popeye’s new chicken sandwich, and South Floridians are flocking to the fast-food chain to try the hot and crunchy treat. I ate the classic and spicy versions of the $3.99 sandwich — hefty fried breasts on brioche buns with pickles — at two locations this weekend, but before I get to the critiquing, I’m still marveling at the crowds, the waits and the overall insanity.

No wonder reigning chicken-sandwich king Chick-fil-A is nervous.

“Everyone’s curious — it’s become the thing to do,” Carol James, of Pompano Beach, said Sunday as she waited in a drive-through line 25 cars long at the Popeye’s on East Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park.(Snip)

Nearly two weeks after its Aug. 12 debut, fueled by social-media buzz and widespread praise, the Popeye’s chicken sandwich has triggered a growing stampede that shows no sign of abating. Big crowds, long waits and supply shortages have become the new normal at Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, a fried-chicken haven with New Orleans roots, 23 South Florida locations and 3,100 stores nationwide.

“It’s blowing up on Instagram,” Jomany Pierre said. "All the hype — I had to try it.” (Snip)

This story amazes me and reinforces my believe that social media needs to be tamed. It's now such a free marketing ploy that some companies only use this to push their products.

Way down in the body of the text, the author can't help but throw a political jab in about Chic-Fil-A and the people that eat there. But I do remember the huge crowds that turned out when the media and Hollywood started blasting them about being Christian. Every Popeye's I have been to, the employees are rude. This wont last long.

But then we would miss the brawls over the sandwich or the employees ranting don’t come to popeyes because they have had enough of making sandwiches

Dave Portnoy did a blind taste test of Popeye's, Wendy's, and Chic-Fil-A chicken sandwiches. Chic-Fil-A won by a landslide in his expert opinion. Social media, similar to looks, will get you in the door, but after that you have to live up to the hype. Popeye's will fade, Chic-Fil-A will keep its crown.

If you don't know who Portnoy is, don't worry about it, but what he says go for a lot of young people.

There is not a Popeyes around here. I have not tried them in many years.

I did like their biscuits and fried chicken.

social media needs to be tamed

You are right. We should go back to reading newsprint. Sorry, that horse left the barn a long time ago. How exactly would you "tame" these companies and their services? Which ones get tamed?

As far as the "political jab" goes, this is about the most even-handed factual treatment I've read:

But Popeye’s has two big edges in the showdown. Its chicken sandwich is available seven days. Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, because the churchgoing family that founded it honors the Christian sabbath. And Popeye’s gives an alternative to those who are reluctant to patronize Chick-fil-A because of its founder’s politics, which includes support and funding to groups opposed to civil rights for the LGBTQ community.
Those things aside, I've got to hand it to the Popeye's digital marketing staff. All this buzz didn't just happen out of nowhere. These digital wizards have mastered modern techniques to generate huge initial demand. Will it last? Can they sustain that? Time will tell, but this is a masterful launch of a new product.

Lastly, who in their right mind would wait 60 or 90 minutes for a sandwich? If I drop into an establishment and see five or six people in line ahead of me, I'm gone. There is hardly anything in this world that is worth that wait. What a waste of an hour of your life that the good Lord isn't going to give back to you.

Simply because of Chic-Fil-A’s Christian values, the media and Popeye’s are attempting to hurt Chic-Fil-A by claiming Popeye’s has a better chicken sandwich. Both should be ashamed of themselves and will have to answer for their transgressions.

Long lines at the Popeye’s a few miles from me. Much more than at the Chik-fil-a a block away. Very unusual.

The left wants a chicken sandwich but can’t bring themselves to eat at Chik fil A. This is hilarious.

Really? I have seen no proof of this. Where does the author get his information? Out of his a__?

I do like Popeye's and Chick-Fil-A, but you need to be selective with your Popeye's locations; Chick-Fil-A's are good across the board...

Hmmm...Must be it’s only going to some very prominent busy locations and not to smaller stores in the chain.

We were going to try one but our local Popeye’s still didn’t have them well over a week after they were supposed to be out. (I read the nerdy food blogs.)

We just drove on a couple of miles to our nearest CFA.

I love the Popeyes red beans. In fact, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t. But we’re from New Orleans, so what do we know?

I don’t eat much fast food, and haven’t tried the new chicken sandwich. If it truly comes with a pickle, I think I will pass. I’ve never tried the Chik Fil A sandwich either — but I am a yuge fan of the Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich. Can’t understand why it doesn’t get more coverage. I could eat one every day.

Sort of like Jim Dandy's Fried Chicken at Vermont Ave. and Imperial Highway in South-Central Los Angeles, just off the 105 Freeway. The staff works behind bullet-proof glass and you make your payment and receive your order through a steel slot. Nonetheless, it's my favorite fried chicken in LA--but I usually order it "to go," for obvious reasons.

Wow that’s the REAL DEAL in tough neighborhood service!

A steel slot :)

I’ve not seen that in the toughest neighborhoods in Brooklyn.
