Razor brand Gillette says it is “shifting the spotlight from social issues to local heroes” after an ad delving into “toxic masculinity” caused a customer backlash.
The new ad, which launched last week, stars Australian firefighter and personal trainer Ben Ziekenheiner. “I’ve been a firefighter for 19 years,” Mr Ziekenheiner says in the ad.
“People sometimes ask if it’s scary. It can be, but like anyone who has a job to do, you prepare — not just in terms of your equipment but also mentally and physically.”
The ad spruiks the brand’s SkinGuard range, highlighting the issue of sensitive skin for men who shave every day — including firefighters, who are required to be clean-shaven as it enables a proper seal for their breathing mask.
“We have a very clear strategy when it comes to how we authentically connect with our consumers,” said Manu Airan, associate brand director for Gillette Australia and New Zealand.
“We will continue to talk about what is important to Gillette and that is representing men at their best and helping men do their best. That is not changing. We will continue to do that and demonstrate it in different ways.”

A few months ago, I happened to come across a new pack of double edge blades in one of my kits.
I knew I had a couple of old double edge razors, probably belonged to my Father originally. I sprayed it with silicone oil and managed to get rid of most of the corrosion.
The blades were perfect.
I then tried it out and to my surprise, it gave me a perfectly acceptable shave. Still not quite as good as some of the newer multi blade ones but I could certainly live with it.

Mayor Pete, Elton John and Richard Simmons will review all Gillette ads to filter out toxic masculinity. Including casting couch interviews for the male models.
Too late. Gillette already insulted me and all men. Gillette is dead to me.
RC, I went back to “wet shaving” 7-8 years ago - not only are they MUCH less expensive than cartridge systems but a far superior product.
Not only are the Rockwell 6C razor & Feather blades state-of-the-art in quality, they produce THE closest shave.
Feather (Japan) also makes THE sharpest medical blades in their industry and the DE blades for consumers are also considered THE sharpest in the universe.
Instead of being a chore, shaving is now an experience...especially with quality shaving soap.
I notice Harry’s razors are now being sold at Walmart!
It is not the same Gillette since the days of the Saturday Night Fights brought to you by Gillette Blue Blades!
Blue blades and a styptic pencil. Those were the days!

They lost me after the first ad.
Never got past the first 5 or 6 seconds of the fake-son ad.
It solidified the decision, however, I made after watching the first ad.
Yuck and double-yuck to their egotistical and arrogant people in marketing and on their Boards.
I found two in my shed that I had years ago. On one you twist the base and it opens to take the blade. The other you have to unscrew the handle to remove the top section and place the blade in.
Weasel words. They mean none of it and are mangling the definition of words, Bill Clintoon style.
I started with Harry’s after their antics and I’m more than happy!
I’ve been perfectly happy with a CVS five-blade number that specifically says “not made by Gillette” on it; will never go back. And my wife worked for Gillette for 18 years.
They never represented me and sure as hell don’t get to now.
