Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksens comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.... ....The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!
That would be my assumption as well.
Because the 50,000 people who live in Greenland are going to vote out the Prime Minister of a country with 5.7 million people?
AFTER we remove any wealth from the environment.
The Don doesn’t ask a second favor once he’s been refused the first, understood?
He didn’t act huffy at all. They could have told him in person that there would be no deal, but they did so publicly and sarcastically. So, he complimented their country and people and politely thanked the PM for not wasting either of their time and canceled the trip. What’s the problem here?
To reiterate......
It is said that most of the Greenland population is Inuit. They hail from Alaska
They immigrated from America
My pipe dream has always been to exchange all of America east of the Hudson for the glorious province of Alberta. Of course, we would give Canadians flyover rights and drive through rights so as not to isolate British Columbia.
“Yeah right. As a NATO country”
I agree. Yet, where are we demanding Turkey get out of NATO since it has already made an order for SAM missiles from Russia???
The BC Interior tends to be conservative. The lower mainland and Victoria tend toward the left. Saskaberryland tends to waver between conservative and old fashioned socialism, not the ‘socialism’ of today.
Not so surprisingly, rural ON also tends to be conservative. (Still a number of Orange Lodges and United Empire Loyalist progeny.) Like most States/Provinces, rural areas tend to be conservative.
Unfortunately,Tranna is ‘culturally diverse’, ie: True-dope is their saviour. Wall off Tranna, Montreal and the BC Lower Mainland and Canada would be a country to be proud of.
You are exactly correct. Not only that, but withdrawing from a state visit, invited by the Queen of Denmark, is a snub to the whole country which is unlikely to be forgotten any time soon. A huge amount of preparation goes into these events (just look at the UK state visit) and it looks petty to withdraw so late on what looks like nothing more than a whim.
This is a rare own goal, I’m afraid.
Out of the blue, Trump wanted to buy Greenland, Denmark says “no”, and Trump says “I’m not going to talk to you” and cancels a trip.
What an overly simplistic view of the matter uninformed by any of the pertinent facts, and no amount of throwing gratuitous jabs at the President (ref. your #127) can change that.
The President did not just wake up one day and decide on the spur of the moment that he wants Greenland; rather, the US is slowly awakened to the growing presence and influence of China in the area and is rightfully alarmed.
Many articles had been written on China and Greenland, here is one from last year that touched on various aspects of the subject (one can choose to have ad blocker on):
Nobody knows exactly what had gone on in our talks with Denmark up to this point, but one thing is clear, the President is somewhat peeved with Denmark. It could be because they refused to do more to thwart Chinas advances, or to intervene in Greenlands decision to embrace Chinese investments.
With the ongoing trade war and its ramifications, China may find itself overextended and no longer have as much money to spend on its Belt and Road Initiative and other foreign projects, and is forced to retreat. That would be the best outcome for us.
MEMO TO DENMARK: I apologize. You are a great people and great country. President Trump means well. If it had been up to me, the first approach would have been much quieter so we could discuss it. We will try to do better out of love and respect for you.
The only people who think it's an idiotic idea are leftists and never Trump stooges who reflexively oppose all of his ideas. Ike and Truman both sought to acquire it, so I guess they were dummies too? It makes all kinds of strategic sense for us to have it, but it's idiotic because Trump hating bedwetters think it's crazy. Ok.
If Denmark had offered to buy Alaska, do you honestly think Trump wouldn't have had a sarcastic response? The man spends a lot of time every day on twitter, pushing out all kinds of sarcastic responses to anybody he doesn't like.
That is an asinine comparison. Alaska is a state. That'd be like trying to buy a chunk of Denmark proper. A better comparison would be Puerto Rico, which most of us here would be happy to unload.
And yes, it is huffy to hop on twitter and say he's not coming, because he's ditching a diplomatic trip over a scenario that was never going to happen.
Who says it's never going to happen in the future? People who know nothing about anything, that's who. Not all successful negotiations happen overnight. Who cares about blowing off Denmark one time? I mean really. What's going to happen over it? Nothing, except some embarrassment that they were blown off by the United States.
It's like you planning a trip to visit a friend, and then tossing in a question about whether the friend will also give you a million bucks, and the friend asking if you're out of your mind, and you canceling the trip as a result.
It's not at all like that. This is geopolitics, not a pen pal meetup. Greenland costs their tiny county a fortune, so it would be mutually beneficial deal. The only holdup from their perspective is pride, which is idiotic and perhaps something they'll eventually get over.
I hope you do realise that is a complete trolling tweet. There was no referendum and there is zero percent chance they would vote to leave Denmark.
There is no source, they made it up to troll people.
The alternative is China and people in Greenland can see what is happening in Hong Kong
“Looks like a good place for the new UN building.”
This would be FANTASTIC!
they could debate global warming all year long! unable to leave the UN building due to snow and planes not being able to land!
Well, the media can lie to us now.
If Greenland becomes a territory they will probably send 6 delegates to each convention. Are the Inuits party animals?
