A jury found a grocery clerk guilty of killing a 17-year-old boy who ran out of the store with a beer he didn't pay for in Memphis, Tennessee, in a case that had sparked protests, authorities said.
Anwar Ghazali was convicted of second-degree murder after a four-day trial, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said Friday.
"This defendant took it upon himself to be the judge and jury and the executioner over a $2 beer," prosecutor Lora Fowler said, according to CNN affiliate WMC.
The shooting happened in March 2018, after Dorian Harris walked out of the Top Stop Shop with a beer without paying, Weirich said.
Security video of the incident played in court shows that Ghazali, while behind the counter dealing with another customer, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Harris. He then ran outside to follow the teen and fired several times.
Afterward, he returned to the store and told a witness, "I think I shot him." He did not call the police, and neither did any other customer inside the store, WMC reported.
Harris was shot at least three times and was left to bleed out, Fowler said. His body was found two days later in a yard near the store with gunshots in the back of his thigh, Weirich said.
Ghazali's defense attorney, Blake Ballin, told CNN in an email that Ghazali maintains he acted recklessly that night but his intention was never to harm Harris.
He said they were pleased that the jury rejected the prosecution's argument that this was a calculated and premeditated murder motivated by the theft of a beer. That would have come with a potential life sentence.
Ghazali is expected to be sentenced on September 23.

THIS is an experiment in what happens during sleep.
I am surprised I agreed with him being shot in this situation.
This could be most any kid in America and even if it’s habitual one cannot plus someone over it as they are running away.
I do not agree with it after getting some sleep.
Maybe the mind resets a little more closely to who your are while you sleep.
I dunno :)
Breaking into a home is entirely different than shoplifting. I agree theft is theft, but in the situation you cite, the bigger crime is breaking and entering.
This is not news worthy, missing? a white male shop owner
>>Unless the perp poses a threat of great bodily harm to the shooter or others, shooting them in the back as theyre fleeing the scene is never legally justified-whether it be over a 2 dollar beer or a Rolex watch.
Unless you’re in Texas. There are still some bastions of civilization.
“Anwar Ghazali”
Allahu Akbar!
And media waited until now, when the new theme is PDJT and his voters are racist, to start pushing this story?
The murder happened in March 2018?
I worked retail “loss prevention” a long time ago and management stated my job was to “keep the honest people honest”. Absolutely forbidden to pursue shoplifters. Frustrating to see someone leave without paying and be unable to stop him or her.It is because of lawyers and criminal advocates convincing soft-hearted jurors to award big payouts to injured criminals that we are forced to tolerate an enormous amount of property theft.
I have read and been told retail prices would be 20% lower if there was no theft.
Retail theft is both stock shrinkage- that is employee theft and shoplifting.
Anwar? Isn’t that the place in Alaska that has all the caribou Exxon wants to drill in?
So, how much is a shoplifter allowed to run off with before deserving to be shot? $2.00? $10.00? $50.00? $100.00? What if a whole group of shoplifters walked in together and ran off with $1000.00? Still okay?
I’m zero tolerance about property crimes because l see the slippery slope.
“I hope you have a hundred shoplifters an hour. or a thousand.”
Do you also hope I kill them all?
The clerk has no defense. He should have known the law.
people here know a lot of stuff this is not true
So is beer free in Memphis now, or not?
I think you have to have a daughter, at least a niece, involved before going after the foot/long/dong!
Let us speculate that this was in a city, an area within that city, that was controlled by organized crime who organized the merchants into paying for protection. You know, to keep “businesses” running for the sole purpose of future payments for continued protection.
The outcome could have been similar or perhaps much more painful and lingering.
In my small town, the Greek immigrant that ran a deli had no problems selling beer to teens. The parking lot on Fridays was packed with high schoolers stocking up on beer.
Joe Biden told us all to grab a shotgun and fire it... indiscriminately, with no regard for what happens downrange.
There is something wrong with this story.
No where in the article did the writers blame President Trump.
Did they just forget?
Yes, as a matter of fact, the next guy considering theft might think twice about it, and we will have a more civil society.
Only a fool would leave Pakistn for Memphis
