Iran is reportedly jamming ship GPS navigation systems to get them to wander into Iranian waters

Ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf have reported unusual GPS interference, among other problems, and the US believes Iran is to blame.

The Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration issued a warning on Wednesday highlighting threats to commercial vessels posed by Iran. The warning revealed that ships have had a variety of issues when operating in the region, including "spoofed bridge-to-bridge communications from unknown entities falsely claiming to be US or coalition warships."

US defense official told CNN that Iran has GPS jammers operating on Abu Musa Island, an island in the Persian Gulf located near the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the aim is apparently to cause ships and aircraft to inadvertently wander into Iranian waters or airspace, thus justifying a seizure.

A perfect target for a GPS signal seeking missile head....

Rather than a missile, a covert quick in quick out special operations operation would do the job as well.

Captured Iranians confessing on TV would play well in Europe

Not a problem, just use some of the older methods of navigation, you know, before GPS.

Oh, that’s right, GPS is all they have now, and all that know how to use

So how many ships have wandered off course and been lost to the Iranians since this has been going on?

I was looking at this the other day on a AIS map, and there is not much room for error when passing through the strait. Iranian territory takes the whole north and eastern half of the passage.

This sounds like BS. There are 24 GPS satellites and it takes 3 to determine location. Other than flooding the GPS frequency with noise in the immediate area there is no way to fake the location of the signal. More likely this is a CIA planted story to try and gin up a war in the Middle East.

If only there were ways to navigate ships through straights and channels that didn’t rely on electronic gizmos and gadgets... /s

There is also quite a bit of traffic physically dodging each other through this strait. Be pretty easy to give way to traffic and end up in Iranian territory.

Thanks for the advice. A family member picked up an Armalite in 5.56 about a year ago and it seemed like decent quality. I think I'll go that route.

Or, launch a Growler and fry their jammers.

“GPS Spoofing is an Electronic Warfare (EW) tool that deceptively provides false GPS data to receivers. This forces the GPS device to provide the user with a false reading of location. If not detected, Spoofing attacks could degrade the accuracy of indirect fires. GPS Spoofing can vary from a few meters, to hundreds of kilometers off of the true GPS location”.

The Persian Gulf isn’t the only place where this is occurring. The South China Sea is prominent among the others...

I agree the story is phony....but only for the purpose of Iran saying they are real experts on GPS. They could be....but only if Russia was helping them.

Jamming is not spoofing. Assuming this is real, they aren’t trying to fool them, they are trying to make their GPS not work. Jamming GPS is easy, you just need relatively low power transmitter that emits higher power noise than the GPS signal, at the same frequencies. Then you can’t read it and you might wander off course a little. Enough, maybe.

Jamming to cause them to go off course is a well known tactic. Iran is led by pirates.

You are negligent if you surrender navigational skills to GPS.
