The combined company would have more than 260 daily papers in the United States, along with more than 300 weeklies. It would be the largest U.S. newspaper company

the U.S. has lost almost 1,800 local newspapers since 2004. Newsroom employment fell by a quarter from 2008 to 2018, according to Pew Research, and layoffs have continued this year.
Both GateHouse and Gannett are known as buyers of other papers. Bulking up lets companies cut costs including layoffs in newsrooms and centralize operations.
...
GateHouses owner, New Media, is taking on new debt to get the deal done a $1.8-billion loan from private equity firm Apollo Global Management. That will have to be paid back.

Consolidation is nothing new to either company. Gannetts last big U.S. print purchase was in 2016, when it bought papers in the Journal Media Group chain for $280 million, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Gannett also owns dailies in major cities such as the Detroit Free Press and Arizona Republic.
Its more recent merger efforts have been unsuccessful. It failed in an unsolicited bid for newspaper chain Tribune. Gannett then fended off an unwanted bid by MNG Enterprises, better known as Digital First Media, a hedge-fund backed media group with a slash-and-burn reputation for cutting jobs and letting papers wither.

“260 daily papers in the United States...”
Wow. That is like owning 260 cats.
Newspapers are good for two things: comics and obituaries.

The senior citizens in the my family read the newspaper every day and the stories they get excited to talk about are 24 hours old news. Today: “There was another shooting in Ohio.” That was news yesterday.
Sad. LA Times has excellent stories about Cardinal Mahoney’s crimes but no one reads the LA Times and Mahoney is walking around like nothing happened.
“Newspapers are good for two things: comics and obituaries.”

Four: Wrapping fish in it

The New York Times makes a excellent liner for my cats litter box.

Since it's Bloombug, I wouldn't take the article at face value. But the tie bears investigating by someone other than the enemedia.
Generally, the plan by the “private equity” groups is to loot the company and then bankrupt it wiping out the other shareholders.
Should be at least 3 years before the Chapter 11 gets filed.

“A newspaper is the absolute last place any of us would go for news. Like the evening news & Sunday talk shows, the model is dead.”
Even in the liberal bay area, in many of the newer developments the home owners don’t subscribe to bigger left wing fish wraps and even the local fish wraps.
The merchants and any surviving local fish wraps have a once a week free fish wrap which has local news, ads and zip/nada/zero political opeds or editorials.
That has been going on for at least a decade.
In the older and more established areas, again no newspapers delivered. People get their local and national news on line.
What is a newspaper?
I think this is terrible news.
Forget national politics, these local papers are how we've exposed corruption and kept our state and local governments somewhat honest.
Who's going to mind the store?
Lost 1800?
Replaced by at least 18,000 web sites.
And how many full time local reporters do those web sites have attending city council meetings and monitoring local political activity, etc?
Newspapers = yesterdays news tomorrow!
Really, our local newspapers are in bed with the Chamber of Commerce and the service clubs.
The same people they are in bed with buying advertising and keep the local fish wraps alive.
The love illegals and promoting the left wing agendas.
They will not be missed by those of us who love America, our
I notice the same thing and I keep coming back to the obvious; the model of news delivery has changed and these dinosours haven't adjusted (because they cant). And it delights me!

If we re elect President Trump, he can Tweet the end of the left wing mediots that have worked 24/7 to destroy America since the early 1900’s.
What will replace the dinosaur left wing Fake News outlets?
We don’t know. Maybe some good business owners will buy what is left and have real news instead of Fake news.
“How many more trees have to die?”
Fake news kills more trees via wasted news prints in a day than forest fires do in a year. (Just a WA guess!)
