GOP lawmaker calls for universal background checks, raising legal age for gun purchases

A Republican congressman from Illinois is calling for universal background checks and raising the legal age to purchase guns following the weekend's back-to-back mass shootings.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger wrote an op-ed published on Medium advocating for the gun reform legislation Monday, in the wake of two in less than 48 hours in Texas and Ohio that killed a combined total for more than 30 people.

“After every shooting, the conversation runs like a broken record with some who believe banning all guns is the answer, while others advocate for arming more and more people to protect against these dangers,” Kinzinger wrote. “Meanwhile, those of us not in those two mindsets are left feeling helpless, frustrated, and at a loss. We have a gun violence epidemic, and to address it, we need to change some laws and change some hearts.”

Kinzinger said universal background checks “might create a slight inconvenience to some, but will not restrict the rights of those who are eligible to purchase.”

The Democratic-controlled House passed a universal background check bill in February. Kinzinger was not one of the eight Republicans who voted for the bill.

The bill has not been voted on in Senate. Following the weekend’s mass shootings, many Democrats called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to bring the Senate back in for a special session during the month-long recess to vote on the bill.

“If you want to raise the age for gun purchases, you need to also raise the age for voting.”

...and joining the military. If we can’t trust 18-yr olds to own guns...we can’t trust them with a gun in the military.

They were 21 and 24, respectively. Age restrictions wouldn’t have made any difference.

The Democrat wing of the so-called Republican Party rears it’s head.

Tell a Rancher in the middle of
nowhere Alaska, Texas, New Mexico,
Montana, Wyoming, when they have
to drive 600 miles round trip
that it won’t be an inconvenience.

He is all about this because here in democrat/rino stronghold Illinois we already have this. All private sales must be run through the State Police for a authorization number before transfer.

Universal background check is meaningless without a national gun registry and the gun grabbers know it. They say they want universal background checks but they really want that registry. Its going to be very helpful during their dream of confiscation.

What about all the other weapons used to kill? Knives, screwdrivers, hammers, baseball bats, tire iorns, or Fence post? Do we need a age limit on them? Lets try hands..they strangle and drown 8 yr old girls after the prep raped them. DNA proof, Prep is still sitting on TN Death Row after 25 yrs doing state appeals.

Do you hope a conservative will run against him, in the primary? If so, who should run?

No, I can’t think of anyone, yet. I live in Bartlett. I hope that district has a conservative state legislator, county elected official, or township elected official.

I saw someone named Phil Collins was nominated for President by the Prohibition Party, having been elevated from VP nominee after the Pres nominee quit. I was gonna sarcastically congratulate you thinking that’s a common name so it was a coincidence but...it’s really you?! Holy crap dude!!!!

Yes, I’m running for president. Please read our platform. It mentions a lot more than alcohol. It says that we’re pro-life, pro-gun rights, and anti-illegal alien. It states that the federal government should obey the 10th Amendment, especially by abolishing the Dept. of Education. I’ll probably be on the ballot in at least 10 states, including AR, LA, TN, WI, OH, UT, and MS. I’ll probably register as a write-in candidate in some Illinois counties, if I know that I’ll get votes in those counties. The Democrat will easily win IL, so I hope that the majority of IL voters, I know, will vote for me.

Wow, they may be very small now but that’s America’s oldest third party. What an honor. I’m aware of their platform.

I’m voting for Trump but you’d be my 2nd choice. I agree with what DJ said. Just the same I hope you get some votes in those states you’re on the ballot, expect for Wisconsin, I would advise you campaign there in a Chicago Bears sweater ;).

I read an article of an interview you and 2 other guys did, the 2016 nominee was one of them, he sounds like a douchebag, I hope you get more votes than he did. They usually do minor candidate debates, I’d try to get into those.

For the record while I wouldn’t back another ban that would fail, I think booze is a scourge. I’ve been drunk exactly once, hated the experience. My brother had a problem, thankfully he quit drinking and smoking too, he likes the cannabis though.

I hope that a lot of Illinois voters, I know, will want to vote for me, since they should know that Trump won’t win IL.
