Trump calls for social media companies to ‘detect mass shooters before they strike’
The Verge ^ | 8/5/2019 | colin lecher

After two recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, President Trump said his administration would ask social media companies to develop tools that could detect potential mass shooters.

While delivering a speech on the recent violence, Trump said “we must do a better job of identifying and acting on early warning signs,” and he suggested social media companies could develop new ways of catching “red flags.”

“I am directing the Department of Justice to work in partnership with local state and federal agencies, as well as social media companies, to develop tools that can detect mass shooters before they strike,” Trump said in the speech.

While the president did not specify what those “tools” might look like, Trump seemed to be suggesting that companies could use predictive software to single out potential shooters based on their activity on a platform. Crucially, this would mean taking action before a person commits violent crimes. Data-mining tools are in wide use, but creating a detection system for violence would inevitably raise a host of privacy and accountability issues.

I don’t see a problem with this. He’s referring to obvious cases where some mutant posts a manifesto online, explaining how he’s going to shoot up a WalMart in El Paso.

WRONG!

It starts with something innocent like 8chan identifying a potential. It ends with FakeBook and Google identifying YOU as a White Male. Therefore you are a White Supremacist and are on a gubmint Watch List.

The most succinct 10 words I’ve read today.

Well done.

I really wish some if the Wizards of Smart that frequent these threads would run for POTUS and show Trump how it’s done!

Practically thinking how do you think this will play out?

The first thing that I would see happening is your name would show up on some kind of ‘do not sell guns to’ list. Please have your video camera rolling when this happens to you so you can set a calm example of how to act when your rights are taken by software written by a 25 year old leftist at google.

I think that as each day goes by, each new atrocity is committed, each new deep state coup plotter skates, that Trump is in way over his head.

If we step back and consider the back facts, that he is/was attracted to media attention, that he fancied the idea of being president, then his ongoing reactions and behavior begins to make perfect sense.

Consider some of his more effecting branding and marketing techniques, like 'swamp', MAGA, etc. In retrospect, don't they appear to greatly diminish what is really occurring - civil war - and ignore what must actually be done?

What if the White Russians had come up with a clever name like the 'swamp' to describe Communist Reds? It's a far cry from describing the true challenge faced by Russian patriots in the ensuing revolution and resulting civil wars.

So too Trump; his dialogue and manner doesn't exhibit the qualities a Lincoln would express. That is, someone who fully understands what is occurring, and what must be done to counter the threat to liberty and freedom.

If this is true, then it's best to out Trump now, to reveal his lack of resolve for all of his (former) base to see. Perhaps it's time we begin to consider what a real post-constitutional republic looks like, rather than continue to engage in denial and fanciful belief in a network of secret, hidden powers that will save us all. LOL

Does that mean they don’t censor the crazies anymore? ;-)

Another camel’s nose under the tent....just imagine Kamala Harris in charge of determining who are the threats.

“I see the word ‘white’ in that web site. ‘White towels’ are obvious code words....”

uhh….Mr. President, with all due respect, that’s impossible.

~~~
You’re kidding right?
Google, facebook, apple... they pay many software engineers six figures to figure out how to tweak everything that anyone reads, writes, likes, sends or posts (or listens too, or uploads, etc...) and tracks it ALL mostly for the sake of contextual and relevance results for monetization of ads and content referral.
It’s not impossible at all. It’s just that there no profit in it. They could easily use what they’re already using to start flagging online symptomatic behavior. These algorithms are often very complex too. Just mentioning that you fragged 18 people in less minute in some console game shouldn’t cause any problems (other than new software ads in your browser)
SOCIAL MEDIA ALGORITHMS..
White? Check.
Male? Check.
Uh-oh. Better report this individual to the State. He could mass murder anyone at any moment.
~~~

The paranoia levels in this thread take the cake.

I am NOT one for advocating invasion of privacy, but that crap is already being done on scales most people are clueless about. The only bad part about this proposal is involving government bureaucracies. That’s usually dangerous and just ripe for corruption.

Still. They’re not going to systematically start rounding up all the white guys (at least not for the next decade or two. lol)

He’s endorsing the FBI’s proposed thought-crime/pre-crime surveillance and action against American citizens.

All of you need to take some B12 tablets, or something to help you think better.

What Trump is doing is telling the deep state if you keep staging false flag attacks you’re going to be regulated.

I have no idea. The point is: He wrote the ‘effing thing and posted it ONLINE. He didn’t send it to the White House, he didn’t send it to Congress, and he didn’t send it to the local police. Who would be in a better position to respond to that than the social media outlet where he posted it?

So reading and responding to a message/threat that is posted ONLINE in the PUBLIC DOMAIN is now “surveillance” and “action” against a “thought crime” or “pre-crime?”

This may come as a shock to some Freepers, but threatening violence against someone actually IS a crime.

My experience with social media is you can report some socialist that is posting off the rails and they say it does not violate their standards and it doesn’t matter if it is threats, or porn, or bad language...all of the above. Conservatives have been banned for sharing news articles that make socialists look bad though.

So...President Trump may be unaware of how it works...but what he said here would simply cause more conservatives to be banned from social media.

Exactly. At this very moment Twitter is banning anyone that post’s the meme “Stop Russian Interference - Demand Voter ID”. It’s a sarcastic taunt that the right is using perfectly. If you post it on Twitter you are *poof* gone!

That is the kind of “detection” we could expect.

Really? That’s how he’s getting tough? If they don’t stop, he’ll give them the greater domestic surveillance via social media they have been asking for?

That is not how it would be used though. Social media is on the side of the socialists...just another excuse for them to silence conservatives and keep any opinions contrary to their agenda off the internet.
