So why did 'Columbus sail the ocean blue' in 1492?

“There are but 155 years left … at which time … the world will come to an end,” wrote Christopher Columbus in his book “Libro de Las Profecias,” composed in 1502 between his third and fourth voyages.

Columbus continued: “… The sign which convinces me that our Lord is hastening the end of the world is the preaching of the Gospel recently in so many lands.”

Though his predictions were off, Columbus’ writings revealed his motivation for setting sail on his first voyage Aug. 3, 1492, with the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria. He sought to find a sea route to India and China as the Islamic Ottoman Turks had closed off the land routes 40 years earlier.

The background of the Islamic state occupying large areas of Europe began when Muslim crusaders, called “Moors,” invaded Spain in 711 A.D. With a cavalry of 80,000, Moors wielding curved scimitar swords, “went through all places like a desolating storm.” The Mozarabic Chronicle, 754 A.D., recorded that thousands of churches were burned and: “God alone knows the number of the slain.”

In 846 A.D., just 46 years after Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome’s old St. Peter’s Basilica, 11,000 Muslims on 73 ships invaded Rome and sacked the Basilica. They looted old St. Peter’s basilica and desecrated the grave of St. Peter. Invaders then trashed the remains of St. Paul, which were in the historic church, San Paolo fuori le Mura (St Paul’s outside the Walls). As a result of this invasion, Pope Leo IV began building a massive wall to protect the Vatican from Muslims raiders.

So why did 'Columbus sail the ocean blue' in 1492?

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue
To represent the dove in Genesis 1:2.

The Age of Discovery:

The Spirit of Discovery is the Spirit of Revelation is the Spirit of Elohim, the spirit that hovered over the face of the waters as the form of a dove. Then God said, "Let there be light!

And guess what? There was light!

That's the very moment the light bulb went on. It's the simple meaning. Nobody wants the simple message because there goes the demand for all of the merchandise to explain the complicated.

Plain spoken Joan Rivers was the most famous Jewish comedienne of modern times, hands down. "Can we talk?"

Her death involved shady medical practice on her throat, the place where her plain words that had no mercy came out.

"Discover the unknown!"

As in, what really *is* the Age of Discovery? Age 5, the traditional age when the little ones leave home to attend school, kindergarten. Same age when kids are famous for being like Joan Rivers, blurting out truth at inconvenient times.

The Columbus song was written in order to teach children history. The adults, not so much. Otherwise they might have caught on that the End of Days information in the book of Daniel that was told is true, was spoken from the place of rivers. The place of truth. The mouth of rivers..

Food was always on the minds of the sailors.

Close, but no. Water was the critical supply. As soon as half of the water butts were empty, the crew would have wanted to go back, since there was no assurance of fresh water ahead of them. Four days without water and you’re very nearly gone.

One reason it took so long for the Portuguese to sail around Africa was the lack of reliable watering places on the North African coast. And they kept the watering places top secret so other nations couldn’t copy their routes.

Because that's the earliest he could get a land guy to unhook the boat from the place.

The circumference of the Earth had been calculated 1500 years earlier by Eratosthenes, to a surprising accuracy given the tools of the day. That Columbus didn’t know that would be surprising.

Southern Italy had a lot of Arab influence through depopulation of the natives (sold them into slavery).

Spot on.

With the Moors (Muslims) expelled from Spain overland routes to the spice countries were too dangerous.

Ferdinand and Isabella sponsored the Italian adventurer first, to celebrate their victory; and, second, to ensure that spices were still available for Spaniards’ tables least the peasants revolt.

“don’t forget the samual adams beer.”

The IPA of course. The original purpose of the extra hoops and alcohol was to make it last longer in transport.

That’s true and that calculation was well known in 1492. That number would have made Columbus’ journey infeasible given the maritime technology of the day. However, Columbus either was unaware of that calculation or rejected it and proposed a smaller value, one that made the trip possible. This was the reason he had difficulty getting any support from European rulers for his voyage. Most knew that it wasn’t possible. Ferdinand and Isabella took a gamble because their main rival, Portugal, had gotten way ahead in establishing a sea route via Africa. It was only good fortune that there was a huge unknown continent blocking the western route.

Actually, he had a ‘thing’ going on with Isabella and Ferdinand figured give him the money and he would sail off the end of the earth as some thought everything ended at the horizon.

So they filled the ship with convicts and derelicts and neer do wells to rid themselves of them also.

..Best laid plans etc etc etc

Thank you for this info. But the diameter of the earth was indeed known possibly within 2% of accuracy, and the concept of latitude and longitude of a round earth was also known and shared since before 200 BC by Eratosthenes.
