Major General Charles C. Rogers

ArmyPatch small   NavySeal small   Air Force Seal   Marines Seal small   Coast Guard Seal small (better)

Charles Calvin Rogers (6 September 1929 - 21 September 1990) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of America's highest military decoration - Medal of Honor - for his actions in the Vietnam War.

Charles Rogers joined the U.S. Army from West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia and, by 1968, was serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in command of 1st Battalion, U.S. 5th Field Artillery Regiment in Vietnam. On 1 November 1968, 1st Battalion was manning a fire support base in the Fishhook region near the Cambodian border when it came under heavy attack. Rogers rallied his men in the defense of the base and, despite being several times wounded, continued to lead the battalion until the attack was repulsed. For his actions during the battle, Lieutenant Colonel Rogers was nominated for the Medal of Honor. His nomination was approved and, on 14 May 1970, Rogers and 11 other servicemen were presented with Medals of Honor by President Richard Nixon at a ceremony in the White House

Rogers rose to the rank of Major General before leaving the Army. He later became a Baptist minister, serving U.S. troops stationed in Germany. He died in Germany at age 61 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arington County, Virginia.

Lieutenant Colonel Rogers' official Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Lt. Col. Rogers, Field Artillery, distinguished himself in action while serving as commanding officer, 1st Battalion, during the defense of a forward fire support base.

In the early morning hours, the fire support base was subjected to a concentrated bombardment of heavy mortar, rocket and rocket propelled grenade fire. Similtaneously the position was struck by a human wave ground assault, led by sappers who breached the defensive barriers with bangalore torpedoes and penetrated the defensive perimeter.

Lt. Col. Rogers with complete disregard for his safety moved through the hail of fragments from bursting enemy rounds to the embattled area. He aggressively rallied the dazed artillery crewmen to man their howitzers and he directed their fire on the assaulting enemy. Although knocked to the ground and wounded by an exploding round, Lt. Col. Rogers sprang to his feet and led a small counterattack force against an enemy element that had penetrated the howitzer positions. Although painfully wounded a second time during the assault, Lt. Col. Rogers pressed the attack killing several of the enemy and driving the remainder from the positions. Refusing medical treatment, Lt. Col. Rogers reestablished and reinforced the defensive positions.

As a second human wave attack was launched against another sector of the perimeter, Lt. Col. Rogers directed artillery fire on the assaulting enemy and led a second counterattack against the charging forces. His valorous example rallied the beleaguered defenders to repulse and defeat the enemy onslaught. Lt. Col. Rogers moved from position to position through the heavy enemy fire, giving encouragement and direction to his men.

At dawn the determined enemy launched a third assault against the fire base in an attempt to overrun the position. Lt. Col. Rogers moved to the threatened area and directed lethal fire on the enemy forces. Seeing a howitzer inoperative due to casualties, Lt. Col. Rogers joined the surviving members of the crew to return the howitzer to action.

While directing the position defense, Lt. Col. Rogers was seriously wounded by fragments from a heavy mortar round which exploded on the parapet of the gun position. Although too severely wounded to physically lead the defenders, Lt. Col. Rogers continued to give encouragement and direction to his men in the defeating and repelling of the enemy attack.

Lt. Col. Rogers' dauntless courage and heroism inspired the defenders of the fire support base to the heights of valor to defeat a determined and numerically superior enemy force. His relentless spirit of aggressiveness in action are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Howdy, radu!

How did your Sunday go? Did it cool off like you kind of expected it to? It hasn’t here. It’s still 84 degrees. At least we’re not like the poor people in NYC boroughs who have limited or no electricity right now.

Just like a third-world country.

Howdy, LUV.

It was a very do-nothing day here. Yesterday kicked my hiney harder than I realized and I was a slug all day. LOL
Been making up for it tonight, getting things done around the house that NEEDED to be done.

No, we didn’t expect a cool-down today and we sure didn’t get one. It was miserably hot and humid. The cold front is moving our way and will come through tomorrow and THEN we get a little cool-down for a few days.

I hadn’t heard about the electricity problems in NYC. Not good at all!

You’re sure pretty toasty down there if it’s still 84 degrees. It’s 73 here at the moment and we just had a nice rain shower.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Was it another scorcher yesterday or was it cool enough for Gizmo to get to run and sniff a bit?

A do-nothing day is always a good day. Even if you have to make up for it later. I’m all about doing nothing. LOL!

There are rain clouds showing up west of us. Sure wish they’d creep our way. Glad you had a rain shower to refresh things after such a humid day.

Well, it’s gone all the way down to 82. LOL! But the high today is supposed to only be like 92, so I’m looking forward to that. Hope your cool-down is better than that.

Well, we walked in the tall grass and also sat in the shade under a couple of spots. That was about it. Supposed to start cooling down today.

Well, my eyelids are really drooping, so I guess I’ll say goodnight. Hope you have a good day tomorrow and it truly does get cooler. For both of us!

I honestly didn’t want it to be a do-nothing day but that’s what I ended up with. Couldn’t really enjoy it because I felt so crummy. But the energy level is back up and all’s well.

Maybe the front will give y’all some rain. Sure would be nice, wouldn’t it?
The shower that came through here a little while ago wasn’t very refreshing. The air’s really soupy now.

Our cool-down will be a little better than yours but not much. What will be nice is lower humidity for a few days.
Then we’ll be back in the 90s and humid again by the weekend. Typical summer weather. LOL

Howdy, Kathy.

No light shows today but we did get a nice rain shower a little while ago. More on the way as a “cold” front comes through and a fairly wet day is in store for us.
I wish y’all could get the same weather because you reeeeeeeeally need it up there.

My back wasn’t so sore from yesterday but the ol’ body sure felt like lead all day today. The “load” has finally lightened and I got most of what I wanted to do done tonight.

It was all worth it because it was such a good day at the museum. All the people I took through were fun to meet and chat with and I learned a little about a couple of items on display from veterans who had dealt with them while in the military.

At least y’all were able to walk around a little. Maybe it will be cool enough today for Gizmo to romp and sniff since the front is moving through.

Good morning, Canteen.

Good morning to our

Military, our Allies, and their families.

Hat tip to Major General Rogers
Job well done.
May you rest in peace.

Thank you, Star (and Ma) for preparing
the Canteen for today's activities.

Popping in to say hello and Hat tip to our heroes.
Awesome what Rogers did in his short life.

It's been hotter than hades; can't wait for the rain and cool.
Storms moving in tonight with some thunder,
which means, comforting the old dog.

Hubby is still unemployed.
But, he deserves some time off.
However, he is trying to reinvent MY schedule, though. LOL

Gonna catch up on pings.
But please stay right where you are.
Chat up the military or a family member.
No need to fret...you know I'll be back!

Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM ~ DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

Neither.

Penny and I retreated to the one air conditioned room and watched documentaries about Apollo 11 all day. She refused to eat, drink water, or go outside. I put cold compresses on her paws and finally got her to drink chilled beef broth to both nourish and hydrate her.

The heat broke this morning, we had a nice walk and then she ate a hearty breakfast.

But it was a rough night.
