Galaxy Quest
Steyn Online ^ | 13 July 2019 | Kathy Shaide

In a just world, O.J. Simpson would currently be serving the 24th year of a double life sentence; Ronald Reagan would have been president during America's bicentennial instead of Gerald Ford — and Galaxy Quest would've earned half-a-billion bucks at the box office when it came out in 1999.

But inept and indifferent studio marketing (plus competition from another "sci-fi" comedy, Ghostbusters) relegated Galaxy Quest to semi-cult status. Which is ironically appropriate, given its plot:

At a science fiction convention, fans await an appearance by the cast of Galaxy Quest, a hokey interstellar TV adventure series unceremoniously cancelled in the early 1980s. The show's fatally typecast has-been "stars" (played by Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub and Daryl Mitchell) are reduced to reluctantly signing autographs at tacky gatherings like this one, when they're not cutting ribbons (in full costume) at supermarket openings.

That is, until genuine aliens — who, in cargo cult fashion, have based their civilization on Galaxy Quest re-runs transmitted through space — touch down and beg "the crew of the NSEA-Protector" to help them defeat the villain bent on destroying their planet. The adorable Thermians innocently believe the program's "crew" are fearless, intrepid space warriors and technological geniuses, not just washed-up actors in laughable uniforms....

I LOVE this movie! Of course I’m a YUGE Star Trek fan.

I am NOT a fan of comedies. Mostly because they are not funny, they are stupid.

I wouldn’t call this a comedy, per se. It is hilarious in places not “stupid”.

Like Steyn said, it is NOT a Star Trek parody.

I have never cared for Kevin Kline as an actor. He was probably passed over because he is not a box-office draw.

He was great in "A Fish Called Wanda," which is a hilarious movie.

It’s amazing how flexible the plot of Seven Samurai is.

Yes, by Grabthar’s Hammer, it is one of the funniest movies ever made. The obvious overdub of Sigourney Weaver saying “Forget that!” as she clearly mouths something else starting with “F” is always a little detail to watch for.

Yeah she had a great girl next door, but classy look to her in that movie.

Also, Kevin Kline was perfect in “A Fish Called Wanda”.

I have always found Kevin Kline to be a pompous, stagy actor. He is okay in “actorish” roles, but I do not find him very believable in most of his real-guy roles. I think he would have been very hammy in Galaxy Quest. While Tim Allen is no great actor, and plays everything pretty much the same, I think he was a better choice for the captain.

Showed this classic to our granddaughter several weeks ago, she LOVED IT!

Fantastic film:

“NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER!”

“By Grabthar’s hammer you shall be avenged!”

Once I watched Soapdish (1991) I was forever convinced Kevin Kline was a great actor.

I would also point out A Fish Called Wanda, where he was terrific. Scary, insane; but, terrific.

That was my first thought as well when I read the article - I was...”wait...what...”

Maybe it was a sequel he meant or something....

Guy Fleegman?

Fred Kwan should have gotten more screen time.

Yeah, the best are the actors you’re not sure if its them in other roles and have to check out the credits.

Sigourney Weaver was in both films (GQ and GB) that summer, actually. She looked good in both.

“Crewman number 6”

played by Sam Rockwell, who went on to a brilliant performance of Bob Fosse in the mini-series “Fosse/Verdon”...
