In a just world, O.J. Simpson would currently be serving the 24th year of a double life sentence; Ronald Reagan would have been president during America's bicentennial instead of Gerald Ford — and Galaxy Quest would've earned half-a-billion bucks at the box office when it came out in 1999.
But inept and indifferent studio marketing (plus competition from another "sci-fi" comedy, Ghostbusters) relegated Galaxy Quest to semi-cult status. Which is ironically appropriate, given its plot:
At a science fiction convention, fans await an appearance by the cast of Galaxy Quest, a hokey interstellar TV adventure series unceremoniously cancelled in the early 1980s. The show's fatally typecast has-been "stars" (played by Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub and Daryl Mitchell) are reduced to reluctantly signing autographs at tacky gatherings like this one, when they're not cutting ribbons (in full costume) at supermarket openings.
That is, until genuine aliens — who, in cargo cult fashion, have based their civilization on Galaxy Quest re-runs transmitted through space — touch down and beg "the crew of the NSEA-Protector" to help them defeat the villain bent on destroying their planet. The adorable Thermians innocently believe the program's "crew" are fearless, intrepid space warriors and technological geniuses, not just washed-up actors in laughable uniforms....

The belittled, hyper-observant-of-every-miniscule-detail fans were the only ones who knew how to direct the crew to the Omega 13.
13 seconds. Brilliant in its simplicity.
But the crew had to navigate the choppers.
There’s a lot to extract from that movie, even regarding the true nature and motives of cute, compassionate little aliens.
Apparently ‘Hans Gruber’ is a common name used in Hollywood fiction:

John Ringo in his ‘Dark Tide Rising’ series gave it a great nod. IMO the second best Star Trek movie behind Kahn.

Galaxy Quest was a hit. Perhaps it justly would have been bigger: at the time, I’d’ve said it was on about par with Ghostbusters; it certainly has aged better.
Probably the best Star Trek movie made.
I don’t agree with George Takei on a lot of things, but I liked his description of “Galaxy Quest”: “chillingly accurate”.

I have never cared for Kevin Kline as an actor. He was probably passed over because he is not a box-office draw.

Once I watched Soapdish (1991) I was forever convinced Kevin Kline was a great actor.
He’s a hell of an actor. Played the psycho in green mile. The slick arms dealer in Iron Man 2. A real character actor.
Love Galaxy Quest. Got to meet the writer a couple of years ago. He just moved out of LA.

I always loved Sigourney Weaver, but I fell in love all over again because of her character in Galaxy Quest.
The hairstyle and color were made for her. It was a complete transformation. Why she didn’t adopt them as her own I don’t know.
Also, she shows a little “Décolletage”. Very nice.

I'm not sure what galaxy Kathy Shaide is in, but Ghostbusters (1984) came out 15 year before Galaxy Quest (1999).
Shoulda beat the pants off Ghostbusters, IMHO.
I about lost it when, in the archive scene on the screen, one of the choppers hit sigourney on the head.
