NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) - A U.S. prosecutor on Monday said Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier charged with sex trafficking underage girls, poses an “extraordinary risk of flight” and danger to the community and must remain in jail until his trial.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who is considering whether Epstein should remain in jail or be allowed to live under house arrest at his mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, said in court that he would probably announce his bail decision on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Berman said he needed more time to absorb the case and listen to people at Monday’s hearing in federal court in Manhattan who say they are among Epstein’s victims and oppose bail.

It should have taken the judge 15 seconds to say ‘Hell, no!’ and send Epstein back to his cell.

Why do billionaires get house arrest anyway?

Rikers Island in the general population would be the appropriate place to warehouse this creep.

All Epstein would need is a few million stashed somewhere, and he could slip away never to be seen again.

He is a spy of a foreign power, owns 2 jets, is personal friends with heads of state.

Bail at any amount is CHEAP:

He will be gone, baby, gone.

Manafort has to go to Rikers Island and Epstein gets to go home. Justice for some not all.

A billionaire with a private jet with range more than 500 miles could easily leave the country and never return.

If this guy was free then he would either run or be suicided. The judge should be smart enough to realize that. I am surprised there is never any mention of the later. If Epstein is let out on bail then it very unlikely that he will ever be back in court for any trial.

He isn’t on a powerful target list.

To stay alive Epstein needs a smoking gun. Feds seem to have a lot of his information.

“Why do billionaires get house arrest anyway?”

As we learned from the OJ trial, the rich are different from us. They have more money.

The legal system is not just laws, and a huge number of them, at that. It’s also case law. If you can afford to hire smart, well-connected lawyers they can find enough cases and laws to argue anything from any standpoint. Throw in that they themselves are rich and well connected and judges, who are probably always on the lookout for what they might do if they lose their position, and judges are tempted to rule in favor; possibly hoping they will get a favor back sometime in the future. I was really pissed off to find that the lawyer for the guy I was suing was the judge’s regular golfing partner.

The legal profession is incestuous. They trade favors in what you and I would call an unethical relationship.

All this means that people with money get house arrest instead of jail time. Although, this case is being so closely watched by so many people that the judge will not want to be embarrassed by having Epstein go failure-to-appear (FTA.) That might actually lose him his judgeship.

Surprised he didn’t get bail. Feel for the Judge, he must be feeling pressure from all directions

One wild card in this is Alan Dershowitz. He was both Epstein’s lawyer and an guest of Epstein’s fun and games, so he has the ultimate insiders perspective

He has been publicly supportive of President Trump and he seems pretty confident that he is not going to get caught up in this train wreck.

Any bets he was framed and blackmailed by Epstein so he turned States evidence in return for immunity and possibly a full pardon from President Trump. This could be the worst nightmare for those involved
