“If he’s so dangerous, how come they can’t find any recent crimes?”

They do have evidence of recent crimes.

In his safe was photographs and DVDs of partially naked young women under the legal age, and if I read correctly one of the images is of one of his former victims.

The leopard didn’t change his spots.

He just got a bit lazy in his arrogance and deigned to keep his trophies.

"Berman said he needed more time to absorb the case ...."

The only reason, maybe, for his need to absorb the case is if he has been threatened, or is being blackmailed or bribed.

The bail thing is a no brainer.

Have you read the indictment?

All the charges are from the 2002-2005 time period.

In addition, the indictment does not mention “Pedo Island” and alleges no crimes on the private jet.

As to the 2008 crime....

A Florida state Grand Jury returned just one charge - soliciting a sex act for money from a girl between age 16-18. Epstein pleaded guilty to that charge.

By the way, Pam Bondi, former Florida A.G., and, the current female U.S. Attorney for south Florida (Ariana something), both endorsed the plea deal in 2008.

Manafort has to go to Rikers Island

Paul Manafort got a reprieve. He's in the Federal lockup in Manhattan. Still not a nice place, but it's not Riker's.

I think people tend to misunderstand the purpose of pre-trial confinement. It is not supposed to be a form of punishment or a barrier to adequately preparing for trial. Its only purposes are to protect the community and to prevent flight. If Epstein is granted bail (which I doubt he will), he will wear an ankle bracelet and will be guarded, at his own expense, 24/7 by LEOs who will arrest him if he tries to flee. His computers would be monitored or cut off. That is of course something that only rich people can afford. Which is unfair but as far as I am aware that is the law, and after all don’t we want judges to follow the law even when it diverges from their personal opinions?

Treat him like Manafort ... solitary confinement and steal all his money and assets.

You are 100% correct. I have argued countless federal detention hearings. It’s risk of flight by preponderance of the evidence OR danger to the community by clear and convincing evidence, all up to discretion of the judge. Period.

They found fake passports and quantities of gold and diamonds when they searched his house.

Epstein has the means to zip over to Teterboro and jump on his own jet without going through customs or regular airport security. So yeah, he’s an extraordinary flight risk. What is so hard about making this decision?

“Well, he is a billionaire. But not for long.

People assume that Epstein was a billionaire. Yes, he was surrounded by wealth. But there is the real possibility that the wealth was an illusion created to further the interests of a peculiar type of intelligence gathering operation. We’ll probably never know for sure. Even if the money was legit I’m sure that after his first run-in with the Law he began moving much of that wealth offshore and setting up hideouts and assumed names with access to same.

Or - a judge who likes the Klintons might want him on the street...the oh-so dangerous street where rob-less muggings, car accidents, and suicides lurk around every corner....

Re: federal detention hearings

Thanks. Interesting and helpful information.

When you speak of “evidence,” is that confined to evidence in the indictment, or is there a broader definition?

Very hard for me to understand why Epstein would be a flight risk or danger based on the current indictment.

All the alleged crimes took place 14-17 years ago.

And, he showed no evidence of flight risk during his 2008 indictment.

In fact, after his guilty plea, the state of Florida allowed Epstein to be on day time “work release” for most of his jail term, which, as far as I know, he never violated in any way.
