A US police officer who was fired after shooting dead an unarmed man was temporarily rehired so he could apply for a pension, local media report.
Philip Brailsford, 28, killed 26-year-old Daniel Shaver in the hallway of an Arizona hotel in early 2016.
He was fired and charged with murder - but was acquitted at trial in 2017.
Records show that he was briefly rehired last year so he could apply for a lifetime pension worth more than $2,500 (£2,000) a month.
The move meant he could be medically retired - rather than fired - which made him eligible for the pension.
"He was eligible for retirement benefits, so he applied for them," local official Chris Brady told ABC News. He added that Mr Brailsford had submitted a claim of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in connection with the shooting.
~SNIP~ Bodycam footage of the incident, released after Mr Brailsford was acquitted, showed Mr Shaver on his knees asking officers not to shoot him.
But he was shot five times with a semi-automatic rifle as he crawled towards the officers while sobbing.
Lawyers argued that Mr Brailsford had responded appropriately, according to his training, when Mr Shaver reached towards his waistband - because he believed there was a concealed firearm there.
No weapon was found on the body, but Mr Bailsford said he believed Mr Shaver was reaching for one.

A cop who can’t tell the difference between a thug reaching for a gun and a drunk crying and begging for his life trying to pull up his shorts. I’m an ex-cop, but this one just burns me up. Several cops there but only one fires. I wonder why? Maybe it’s because all the others have common sense.

I saw the video too, and I cannot comprehend how anyone would vote "not guilty" after watching it. The man on the floor was clearly no threat to anyone, and it looked like out and out murder to me.
That cop should have gone to prison for that bullsh*t he pulled. I think the cop was having some roid rage or something going on. He was irrational.
I think he was on roids when he shot that guy. Nobody gets that crazy unreasonable without being juiced on some sort of chemical cocktail.
The guy was sobbing for his life. The cop was not threatened. He was executed for moving, not for posing a threat. This “cop” is a POS. Can’t believe they let him get a pension. He is young enough to work anyways. Lord help us.

First of all there would have been race riots across the country. Secondly, the cop would have been convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years or more.

Washington state stopped those lucrative medical retirement bennies for any LEO/FF who were hired after 1978. I know of 2 LEO’s that were severely injured in their 20’s and got nothing, except paid retraining from Labor & Industries.
Apparently Arizona still allows this.
He was acquitted by a jury, so be it. But, he’s 28. Why the hell is he getting a pension for life when he obviously screwed up isn’t competent to be on a police force?
I think the cop that fired was jacked up on roids. I’ve seen other people who were doing steroids to bulk up, and they acted just like that. Excessively aggressive, paranoid, and quick to violence.
The article says he claims to have PTSD.

I read on the website called "heavy" that the Cop's dad worked for the police department in "Internal affairs" division.
This guy is a psychopath He obviously took the job to bully people around kill CSA serving to protect. It is outrageous he is allowed a pension.

Fire the person and take their pension.
Then go back and fire this psychopath. The taxpayers should not reward a psychopath.
