A government official confirmed that Trump is expected to announce he will drop the legal battle to include the question on the census survey and instead direct the Commerce Department to obtain answers on citizenship through other means, but it was not clear how that would occur or how it would be funded.
The U.S. Census Bureau is part of the Commerce Department. The U.S. Constitution specifically assigns the job of overseeing the census to Congress, limiting the authority of the president over it, which complicates adding the question to the decennial survey via presidential missive.
Trumps decision not to proceed with an executive order on adding the citizenship question to the census was first reported by ABC News.

He got the oil flowing for now. He stopped the greenies too. He has done some things right. But the big things he gets an F-.
This is sudden and unproductive flip-flop is the sort of thing that English Ambassador was talking about.
the tree of liberty will need some water.
Well, I feel we are losing some key battles here, but not to vote Trump means high taxes, hate speech laws, return of regulations, loss of private insurance and a general plummet to hellholes except in very rural areas.
I gave you my top issues. My vote goes for performance especially against campaign promises. i’ll worth din or not vote the top of the ticket if he doesn’t show more than what he has already in those two areas. i know what the dems will do, I won’t re-hire someone who makes false promises.
I thought Barr had a plan?
************
He does. His plan is to indict the agencies, not the people. Much easier than holding individuals accountable.
Just watch.
I do believe the sky is falling.
I see through this; he is keeping the Left guessing - they think they know what he is doing, but they don’t.
Patience. When you say, we have been patient, Trump, just get it done, then try harder to be patient and trust. Stop flailing.
Hes getting a D- on immigration
*************
The moment he backed off closing the border with Mexico it became apparent that he was blowing a lot of smoke. He should have at least closed the border for a short period of time to demonstrate his commitment to fixing the immigration problem and holding Mexico responsible.
Failing to do that allowed Mexico to conclude that we weren’t serious and they gamed us by doing the minimum. They’re not stupid like we are.
Trump never intended to close the border IMO. It was all bluster which accomplished little except a few token efforts by the Mexicans. They are the ones winning.
It's taken me years to understand what Cankles really meant when she referred to patriots as 'deplorables': you have to pretty pathetic to believe such a hack. It explains why the media and other elite think conservatives are fools as well. They know Trump from first hand experience - consider the blind faith people who attend his rallies must possess.
The whole thing is nonsense - the fatal dosage was administered long ago. I used to wonder about Madame Defarge, why Dickens imbued her with pathological hatred for generations not yet born. It's because the engineers behind this whole scheme will be long gone when the bill comes due. Hence, the drive to punish anyone even remotely connected, if only through ancestral family lines.
How do you indict an agency?
Trump tried, but the court blocked him.
from what I’m reading around here, looks like it’s President Harris in 2020
The first problem was he yelled immigration all during the campaign and worked everyone into a fever for the wall.
The day after the election, he should have asked Ryan and Turtle if they would provide funding for the wall. On Jan 21, 2017, if there was no funding, he should have proclaimed the emergency declaration then. BTW he had both houses in the republican party then.
still time to flex
The fact that no republican will say she is ineligible shows how weak the republicans are.
When it comes to immigration, he has caved on literally everything.
