Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday said she was done talking in public about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the tensions roiling her caucus after the New York lawmaker criticized her in an interview with The Washington Post.
Pelosi at her weekly press conference said she'd said what she wanted to say at a closed-door caucus meeting on Wednesday and refused to engage much with reporters asking her about the fight that has dominated the week in Congress.
The Speaker said her remarks at the closed-door caucus meeting calling on Democrats not to take public shots at one another were motivated by a tweet sent by Ocasio-Cortez's chief of staff that compared members of the Blue Dog and New Democrat groups to Southern Democrats.
And she shrugged off any offense that Ocasio-Cortez or the three other members of the "Squad" might have taken from her remarks.
"They took offense because I addressed, at the request of my members, an offensive tweet that came out of one of the members' offices that referenced our Blue Dogs and our New Dems essentially as segregationists," Pelosi said. "Our members took offense at that. I addressed that. How they're interpreting and carrying it to another place is up to them."
"But I'm not going to be discussing it any further," Pelosi said. "I said what I'm going to say."
In the interview with the Post published Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez accused Pelosi of singling out women of color for criticism.
When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arms distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood, Ocasio-Cortez said in the interview. But the persistent singling out ... it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful ... the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.
She also said Pelosi's most recent shots at the "Squad" in an interview with The New York Times felt like part of a pattern.
Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday told CNN's Manu Raju that she did not think Pelosi had any racial animus.
The tweet that provoked Pelosi, from Ocasio-Cortez's chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, has since been deleted.
It described the centrist Democrats to "new Southern Democrats" that "certainly seem hell bent to do black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s." Pelosi said that members had taken offense at the tweet and asked her to address it.
A senior Democratic aide associated with the Blue Dog Coalition pushed back against Ocasio-Cortez's comments about Pelosi on Thursday.
"Let's not forget the fact that Rep. Ocasio Cortez's chief of staff called a group of members racist. This is a group of members led by an immigrant woman of color, and this group includes several other people of color, including two black men who actually experienced the segregated South," the aide said.
Perhaps Pelosi can kill several birds with one stone by addressing her remarks to the JD.
Four...
But anyhow you’re right. They won’t be controlled because they don’t care about the party, they only care about power and influncing others to destroy the country as we know it. That’s why they are there and you have to admit they’re doing their jobs well.
Omar said as much yesterday, when she said “leadership” needs to stick to it’s job and they’re stick to theirs.
The Republicans are powerless to do anything about the Squad, but the Democrats are not. Pelosi et al have to be burning up the phone lines to Joe Crowley and others who they will put back in place next year.
Somewhere Paul Ryan and John Boehner are having a good laugh.
So, now we can call AOC “That Yankee Bitch”
Her kind does that anyways, regardless of who the current leader is..................
More popcorn please.
Pelosi is mad that AOC successfully called her the racist that she is.
Uni Party Paul Ryan has been advising AOC to chill against Uni Party Pelosi.
“Nancy didnt get where she is by being a nice person.”
Agreed. I just wonder how Nancy’s gonna deal with AOC. So far, she seems to be trying to subdue her my making her get more involved in the daily business of Congress instead or photo ops and tweets.
Nancy (along with the other leadership in the House) likely resents that they had to gain their power thru work and effort and not thru one election win like AOC. They see AOC as an usurper and loudmouth who does nothing for them - other than to give the GOP more ammo to use in the next election.
I’m sure that Nancy is open to the idea of primarying AOC in the next election. But doing this is a win-lose proposition for Pelosi. She’ll irritate the Far Left if she does it and like it or not, she needs them. But at the same time, AOC is an albatross hanging around Pelosi’s neck - one she needs to be rid of.
In all seriousness, watch “Mr. Smith goes to Washington”, except in the real world there is no bad guy coming clean in the end.
I think that will give a hint...
Or Squat’s.
LOL. Pelosi can’t tell AOC what to do. Pelosi is an old, white person, who needs someone like AOC to put her in her place.
AOC should be in charge instead of Pelosi. AOC would weed out all of the old, white, and blue-dog Democrats and replace them with new blood, people of color, and radical Socialists.
AOC is the future of the Democrat party—what’s left of it.
It won’t matter much after 2020. They’ll all be back benchers, and AOC will be writing her memoirs in crayon after the five o’clock rush gives her a moment from pouring beer.
Talk to the Hand ,LOL
If you are going to depose the queen, you better make sure you succeed.
