FBI makes arrests in Puerto Rico corruption scandal, prompting calls for governor’s ouster...
The Washington Post ^ | 7/10/2019 | Jeff Stein

The FBI on Wednesday arrested two former senior officials who served in the administration of Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, leading the chairman of the House committee that oversees Puerto Rico to call for the governor to step down.

The arrests also spurred concerns on Capitol Hill about the billions of dollars in aid that Congress has approved for the island.

The federal indictment says the former officials illegally directed federal funding to politically connected contractors. The arrests come about a month after Congress approved a controversial disaster aid bill that earmarked additional funding for Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria in 2017. The aid was tied up in part because President Trump called island officials “incompetent or corrupt.”

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), chairman of the Natural Resources Committee that oversees Puerto Rico, called on Rosselló to resign amid the ongoing federal investigation.

“We’ve crossed that crucible now,” said Grijalva, who later reiterated on Twitter that he supports Rosselló's resignation. “The restoration of accountability is so key going forward.”

It's one thing to blame Trump for racism for not giving more support to PR.

But when you have far-Left Raúl M. Grijalva coming down hard on PR, you know this runs deeper than the headlines.

Anybody who didn't have their heads up their arses over the last decade, could tell you without investigating that the democRATS were the problem in PR.

I hope they nail that Leftie mayor of San Juan too. It's impossible for her not to be involved in all of this graft and corruption going on in PR.

I sometimes wonder if there is anyone more corrupt in the US Congress than Progressive Caucus Chair Congressman Raúl Grijalva.

Governor was formerly a Democrat, is now what they call a New Progressive. Says it all.

The Governor is still very much a Democrat. The New Progressive party is a local political party that includes both Democrats and Republicans. I explained the “Progressive” part of their name in yesterday’s thread:

“Not to defend anyone, but the name of that party was in use before leftists started using the word “progressive”. The “progressive” part of the name “New Progressive Party” has nothing to do with leftist policies. A better translation is “For Progress” (”progresista” vs. “progresivo” in Spanish. This party was founded in 1972 by a stalwart Republican, former governor Luis A. Ferré. He named it so, 1, to attract moderate Democrats who could work with Republican policies, and 2, to create progress in the sense of economic progress. Today that party is still made up of both Republicans and Democrats, but currently dominated by the Democrat wing”.

Dems and their ilk have always been obsessed with proper terms for things. However, their fancy labels can never cover the stench of what lies beneath them.

Absolutely. I once argued with Rush about how we naively continue to use the euphemism “liberal” when we must be calling them out for what they are, socialists. I’m glad it is finally catching on.

Why did you leave out the other 49 (or 56 according to Barry) states? If you honestly believe that this crap only happens in one place in America you are either ignorant or more likely just a simple hater.

We wouldn’t be seeing this if Hillary was president. Hillary would just get a payment.

By the way, Republican Luis A. Ferré who started that party in 1972 probably knew some moderate Democrats. There were probably still some then. I can’t name any now, at least not in the U.S. Any Republican today who would join a party with the term Progressive in it, that included Democrats, has to be a RINO. Ferré died in 2003, at the age of 99. Since he was supposed to be such a strong Republican, I wonder if he supported abortion which is legal in Puerto Rico.

My one and only trip to PR opened my eyes to incredible corruption and the constant threat of crime.. every person who could afford it throughout the Island had burglar bars on ALL their windows... the people outside the cities were kind but you need to keep your guard up at all times.

"What we need here is sort of a denazification program like they did with Germany after the war. No one who had ever held an active role in either the PPD or PNP parties should be able to hold public office or get close to public funds, ever. Not them, their children or their grandchildren."

We're due right here in the good ol' USA too!

Why racist? Because the politically corrupt are more likely to have lighter colored skin?

Not to change the focus of this article, but I think I know the reason for Obama referring to 56. Obama went to school in Hawaii. Hawaiians were probably still smarting from the fact it to so many years after Pearl Harbor before they became a state. Thus they would have emphasized the territories and dependencies, a number of which were also in the Pacific. THey are: Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC. Actually I think he said 57, and when I asked another Freeper “why do I only find 56, he said because when Obama was in school we probably had the Panama Canal Zone.”

While all of them except PR and DC have rather small populations, I see no reason why PR and DC should not be. PR, of course, has voted rather ambivalently over time. On the other hand in a recent referendum, DC citizens voted over 70% in favor of statehood. DC has a population larger than Vermont and Wyoming. It also returns 3 or 4 times the amount of IRS tax money than it gets back in grants and other payments. For DC citizens not to be able to vote on how their money is spent is grossly unfair, especially as they are giving so much more than they get back. I know of no major world capitol where their citizens do not have such voting rights. And, NO, DC citizens want statehood, not just voting rights.

What kind of traitor’s political party do you belong to if you don’t believe that taxpaying American citizens don’t have the rights all other American citizens have, Sorry it appears they like the “wrong” party, but you are no patriot.
