Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued her war of words with Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday night, calling the Speaker of the House “outright disrespectful” for criticizing women of color.
The Bronx Democrat was reacting to Pelosi’s repeated attempts at reigning in some of the more left-wing members of her caucus and chastising the freshman reps for tweeting too much.
“When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood,” Ocasio-Cortez told the Washington Post.
“But the persistent singling out — it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful — the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”

No, for at least the last few decades “people of color” has meant “non-white”. “Colored people” refers specifically to African-Americans, and is considered perjorative nowadays, for other reason other than it seems to have been most popular when used to segregate during Jim Crow.
The distinction between the two is obviously lost on a lot of people, and so can make for some awkward situations as well as sentence construction!

That's something that's puzzled me for a while now.
Why did Nancy award these freshmen reps with committee assignments anyway? Is that normal? I always thought committee assignments were plumb jobs of some prestige that took years of loyalty and hard work to win.

As to your idea, I agree. When AOC first began running her mouth in the press, I thought for sure Nancy would rein her in, but she didn't. It's a sign of a poor manager, that she's let AOC run off at the mouth for over two years without doing anything effective to get her to function as a teamate.
Essentially, Nancy has allowed AOC to skip the normal years-long process of working your way up the ladder. AOC's become a leader all on her own, in an organic, uncontrolled way. She's gained an awful lot of support among rank and file Dems, so Nancy had better play it cool with the discipline, else she'll spark an internal war within the party.
I remember as a child, wondering why caucasian people were called 'white', when they were clearly pink.
Same for negroid people. Why are they called 'black', when they're clearly brown?
And Hispanics aren't brown. They're tan.

True, most of what you say. But my point was these people, black, white, brown, yellow or green (as in watermelon environmentalists), are more RED than anything else.
“Greenies” are referred to as ‘watermelons’ because they are green on the outside and often Red (commie) on the inside.
My wife and I are both darker than her, I neglected to use my native blood to my advantage and she is part Sicilian. I guess I’ll start calling her WOC.
