Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) argued Monday that President Trump's push to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census is an effort to "make America white again" in an adaptation of his campaign slogan.
"This is about keeping you know his hat make America white again," Pelosi said at an event in San Francisco about election security legislation, referring to the red "Make America Great Again" hats that are popular among Trump supporters.
Pelosi, like other critics of adding the citizenship question to the 2020 census, argued that it could result in racial minorities being undercounted so that legislative maps can be drawn more favorably for Republicans.
"They want to make sure that people, certain people, are counted. It's really disgraceful. And it's not what our founders had in mind," Pelosi said. "What they want to do is put a chilling effect so certain populations will not answer the form."
President Trump told reporters late last week that he is considering an executive order to ensure the citizenship question is included on the census after the Supreme Court blocked the effort in a ruling last month. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Trump administration's argument that the citizenship question is needed to enforce a federal voting rights law didn't hold up to the evidence provided in the case. The court said that the Trump administration would have to offer a different legal justification for adding the question.
The Trump administration initially appeared to relent on pursuing the question. But the Justice Department reversed course last week and said that officials have been ordered to find a way for the Trump administration to include a citizenship question on the census.
House Democrats have been investigating the Trump administration's efforts to add the citizenship question. The House Oversight and Reform Committee voted last month to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas for documents about adding the citizenship question to the census.
“...racial minorities being undercounted...”
OK, Pelosi....What “race” will NOT answer to being a citizen????
Through gerrymandering Pervocrats have used census tracts selecting areas of certain minorities to create congressional districts
Back President Trumps effort to make certain the census form contains the citizenship question in it and no reference to race. But to the country of where the respondent is a citizen of if not an American citizen.
TIME TO END HYPHENATING AMERICANS
One thing the Mexican Constitution has that we should consider doing.Mexico has no hyphenated Mexicans. They prohibit any reference to race when they conduct a census or issue any means of identification, Where a photo id is not available physical description is needed skin color yes but not by race but by nationality..
By doing this Mexico has avoided balkanizing, creating fractional disputes in areas where a given group in one of its states is a majority or a minority. Plus it could play a significant part in shutting down the political playing off racial divisions between Americans by the Democrats.
LOL! You summed it up!
They know they can’t get the white vote....they may as well pander to the demographics they need to win.
Oops, I complemented somebody else for your post....Love it, and you have summed it up.
attempt to conceal effort to make America non-American.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Four consecutive Presidents before President Trump, two of each party, pursued a policy of non-enforcement of laws and borders that was designed to make America non-American.
We would not vote for the New World Order so they are importing people who will.
Pelosi is a raciest.
You came here...you either became a citizen or didn't. Either way you were counted.
Yeah, she right - we want the 'certain people' counted - the 'CITIZENS' OF OUR COUNTRY...
Does Pelosi favor counting tourists at Disney World? If not, why not?
Its exactly what our reasoned, God fearing founders had in mind.
Well Nancy, weve given blacks EVERY opportunity to be successful. Given them preference with government programs. And on and on and on. And yet, they still complain and nary a thank you.
And in the process makes all minorities afraid to answer the census. Good Job. Pelosi just did more to MAWA than Trump ever thought about doing.
Which position is racist: asking a Hispanic person who is a citizen if they are a citizen on a questionnaire... Or believing that a Hispanic person who is a citizen will be afraid of answering the questionnaire at all because they are asked if they are a citizen?
Are black Americans afraid of the citizenship question? Are any legal immigrants afraid of the citizenship question (the legal immigrants I have known have always been quite happy and up front about their immigration status)? You would only be afraid if you are not a citizen and could face legal problems by not being truthful about your legal status on the questionnaire.
If there’s a different explanation, I would be interested in hearing it.
A stable American population —like the one that existing prior the 1965 Immigration Reform Act— would sure be nice. We were 85-90% White back then. Hard to believe. In two generations, our most populous and beautiful state (CA) has been destroyed by invading populations and the democrats who use my tax money to buy their votes.
....and your point?
If only it were that easy, you bag of wobbling corruption. Your insane party gave us AOC, Talib, and Omar. That didn’t add value to your smelly caucus.
The congresswoman wants to include illegals in her district as funding resources. This politician is despicable and hopefully disposible as well.
