Wayfair is reportedly donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross following employee backlash over the company's $200,000 deal to furnish detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Employees at the furniture retailers Boston headquarters participated in a walkout on Wednesday, after asking executives to cease business with a non-profit government contractor and donate proceeds from a recent bedroom furniture sale to a refugee advocacy group.
Wayfair employees, using the Twitter handle @WayfairWalkout, said Tuesday executives did not agree to the request, which was signed by more than 547 employees. The request asked for proceeds from the $200,000 be donated to the advocacy group Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES).
Amid the employee walkout, Wayfair co-founders Steve Conine and Niraj Shah sent a letter to employees saying $100,000 donation would be made to the American Red Cross, "in their effort to help those in dire need of basic necessities at the border, according to a copy of the letter obtained and reviewed by CNN.
Wayfair has not responded to The Hill for comment.
Protesters shared images of the walkout on Twitter, showing employees in Bostons Copley Square with signs reading #wewontbecomplicit in childhood incarceration and dont look away.
The protest was backed by progressive freshman Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
It follows recent reports of unsanitary and inhumane conditions at border facilities housing migrants, including children and infants.
I guess they want kids to sleep on concrete floors.
Fire them all.
If I was running the place, anyone that walked off the job would be unemployed this afternoon. And the money should have gone to the Salvation Army. NOT the Red Cro$$. And, is the bedding still headed south?
Capitulation will only generate more demands. Wayfair should treat each walkout as a constructive resignation and replace these former employees.
Wayfair is a loss-making corporation. These employees must think they have plenty of other career options once the company bites the dust.
Im going to guess that Steve is the marketing guy and Niraj runs the technology.
WHY?
I’d of fired the whole lot of em. They are employees, they don’t dictate who the company does business with. But then I’m not a liberal pussy.
Companies are free to be stupid, were free to shop elsewhere.
“Capitulation will only generate more demands.”
Very true.
Mother ####er!!!!
I spent several thousand there in December!!!
Still have more purchasing to do for new place. Thousands.
Wayfair workers just eliminated wayfair from the list.
I was about to buy some accent pillows from them.
Nope.
Oh and that $100K going to the Red Cross?
Means no bonuses, raises or profit sharing for you idiot employees this year.
Concentration camps aren’t sposed to have furniture.
Or food & medical care.
Oh, wait...
They are aiding the damned ILLEGAL INVADERS!
Wayfair said they would not donate to the Immigration and Refugee fund, but would give some money to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross will stick it in their general use bucket I am sure.
The walkout was in Boston. Its on the news here.
With all respect, I agree with you. However, the protestors in the walkout represent the mainstream opinion in this s-hole of a state.
Time for patriots to turn the tables on these disgusting people!! Why are they not providing beds for the little children!!! Two can play same game!! SCREW YOU WAYFAIR!!
So a segment of Wayfair employees want to politicize their jobs. What about those employees that disagree with them and do not have an issue with selling furniture for use at the border? Everyone that walks out should be immediately fired.
Then they will have plenty of time to politic on the unemployment line.
The protestors demand that Wayfair’s $200,000 instead be donated to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services...
The “nonprofit” poverty pimps gotta get THEIR cut, or else.
