Walmart Opens a New Window. is working to reduce checkout theft in more than 1,000 U.S. stores with the help of cameras powered by artificial intelligence Opens a New Window. .

The retailer began investing in the surveillance program, dubbed Missed Scan Detection, several years ago in an effort to combat shrinkage — loss due to several causes including theft, scanning errors, waste and fraud, a Walmart spokeswoman told Business Insider Opens a New Window. .

"Walmart is making a true investment to ensure the safety of our customers and associates," Walmart spokeswoman LeMia Jenkins told the business site. "Over the last three years, the company has invested over half a billion dollars in an effort to prevent, reduce and deter crime in our stores and parking lots.”

“We are continuously investing in people, programs and technology to keep our stores and communities safe,” she added.

The AI-powered cameras were rolled out to more than 1,000 stores about two years ago and the retail giant has seen positive results since then, according to Jenkins, who said shrinkage has reduced in stores where the cameras have been added.

It has been my impression, for a long time, that Walmart requires all female employees to be least 50-lbs overweight.

Some people won’t go to Walmart anymore because of this self check out thing. They now only have one line with a cashier and it takes you half an hour to get through it. Some people refuse to check themselves out and will no longer shop at stores that have converted.

I hate self scanners. Something goes wrong more often than not, and the scanner prompts are often confusing, as far as I’m concerned.

“When they stop me to see my receipt, I tell them no, I’m not a thief. They just saw me 4ft away going through the checkout.”

They’re checking up on the cashiers, not you.

"I check out by standing off to the side, out of view of the camera when I see these at Walmart."

Just so you know, some cameras are designed to be seen (to act as a deterrent) and some are not.

Ive noticed at my local Wal Mart the returns area typically has about 3 - 5 people. Unless, the clerk happens to be of a certain racial group, then, about 10 - 15 people of the same racial group also have a sudden need to return things. Anything new that Walmart adds in terms of security is going to keep my prices down!

Facial recognition will enable stores to network on known shop lifters. One they walk in the store, they will be under extra scrutiny.

Today I used a Lowes gift card. They wanted to see my driver’s license and the pin number on the back of the card. People were hacking the card. The cashier told me how people are walking out with tools and taking lawnmower, throwing them in their truck and driving away.

I find that these self checkouts are a great time saver. For me it is a game to see how fast I can run my purchases through and be out the door. I am fast. Others struggle. Some day everything will have RF chips. You just load up the basket, run it through the reader and everything is instantly checked out at the same time.

This is something that infuriates me more and more over time.

The grocery store nearest me just took out 2 more lanes for 4 more self-checkout stations.

Their prices still suck. At this point my grocery shopping has gone all to Aldi. I can tell I’ve saved $50 every trip and only use a traditional grocer for things they may not have that trip.

Wal Mart is so self serving that frequently the only lanes that are manned late night/early morning are the ones that sell cigarettes. Hell, the self-serve stations are now 80% card only and people have to wait for the one to take their cash.

Seems like they’ll spend 5 million to save a million worth of loss these days. I think they just hate humans or maybe just those smelly walmart type of humans. Nothing like loathing your customers.

Thanks! Sounds like you need to scan/edit the text after you paste. I have this same problem sometimes. Always a good idea to scan before posting.

I hope they have cameras pointed on the stockers and unloaders. Lots of shrinkage occurs here too.

Only until President Sanders has them all in a union and sitting on Walmart's Board of Directors.

There are already enough lawsuits that happen when human loss prevention officers make a mistake.

When AI starts screwing-up it’s gonna be a golden age for lawyers.
