The Price Ceiling: NY Govt. Could Decide Consumer Prices By Gender
Americans for Tax Reform ^ | June 14, 2019 | Laurel Duggan

Posted on 06/18/2019 2:30:23 PM PDT by plain talk

This week the New York Assembly passed a bill which would ban what they call the “pink tax,” which in fact is not a tax at all, but a price difference for goods marketed towards women. According to New York’s Department of Consumer Affairs, for similar products including clothing and personal care, the women’s versions are more expensive 42 percent of the time and the men’s versions are more expensive 18 percent of the time.

Senate Bill 2679 bans price differences on the basis of gender for similar (note: similar, not identical) products. It could be extra confusing for New York City, which recognizes over 30 genders with enforcement of massive fines.

By passing this bill, the New York Assembly has affirmed that it does not believe women are smart enough to decide for themselves whether a pink razor or vanilla-scented deodorant is worth an extra dollar. Rather than letting consumers choose between supposedly equal but inequitably priced goods, the bill would allow the state to enforce price controls, stripping consumers of their right to choose.

The state would mandate the price margins, and consumers would have to choose between the limited array of products that their favorite brands can legally sell. The idea that women cannot decide for themselves whether a product is worth the price is just a sexism-tinged version of the government-knows-best ideology behind socialism.

. However, the momentum in the opposite direction still has not reached the precipice yet.

Agree. The pendulum has a little more to go before beginning a swing back. That’s if it’s a pendulum and not a ratchet.
The next election will have a lot to say on that matter.

Price controls inevitably lead to shortages. Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises compared price controls to traffic signals in a large city... removing traffic signals creates chaos.

It is true. My sister buys men’s shirts and saves good money. Also dry cleaning cost more for womens shirts.

If a similar men’s product is cheaper then the women’s version, what prevents a reasonably intelligent woman from buying the men’s verson?

Because the manufacturers and retailers won’t let them?? /sarc

Men will buy or more accurately, wear the same shirt or style of shirt for years.

We don’t care about the cr*p “so and so” had on the other night, the color being last year’s thing, too many people we know that have the same one, etc.

Manufactures, distributors and retailers don’t need to offset the “out of fashion” cliff with products for men.

People say America is not a Socialist country let alone saying America would never grasp full on Socialism. People are wrong on both accounts. America is basically a soft Socialist country slowly inching to full Socialism.

Unfortunately when the pendulum stops and begins to move the other way it will be like a wrecking ball. Which what people will term as CW II.

Price is an equilibrium between what the consumer is willing to pay and the price the producer is willing to accept.

If the price is too high the producer gets stuck with unsold merchandise.

If the price is too low the producer quits producing rather than lose money.

But Democrats know what the price of everything should be, and the value of nothing.

“”It could be extra confusing for New York City, which recognizes over 30 genders with enforcement of massive fines.””

They’re kidding!!!! 30 genders?

I wonder if there’s anything that could confuse New Yorkers any more than they already are. I’m talking “NYC” as for awhile yet upstaters seem to have their heads on straight but for how long, who knows? A pity that the ignorance of NYC voters rules the entire state! Like CA, it will never get back to normal for normal folks.
