I would offer this observation....that the big players within the White House (probably the Democratic Party as well) did the polling and knew by mid-summer 2015 (even four to six months prior to the Iowa Caucus), that a straight up Hillary versus Donald Trump election would go to Trump.

I would agree with that. And true to her character, she expected the Deep State to move heaven and earth to excuse her for her unauthorized server, overlook her missing emails, and to get rid of Trump rather than pay some simple campaign calls in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Now, you bring up a key point which never gets enough attention. In that final hundred days...if you were running a campaign and knew four of your ‘must-win’ states (Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota) hung in the balance...you’d arrange for a major arena speech in each of the four states about every ten days.
I think the fear from her campaign folks was that they’d go and hire up a 5,000 seat arena (say for example in Minnesota) and only get 2,200 folks to show up. Trump wasn’t having that problem...when his people booked up an arena or auditorium....they generally filled it to capacity.
On the server issue, the FBI went by the script and protected all the way up to the Weiner laptop discovery. Up to that point, they had a decent alibi and could just pretend to investigate. After the NY police found the emails on Weiner’s laptop....this turned into a mess that no one from the FBI could fix unless you just pretended nothing illegal existed.
It's possible Russians believed Trump would lose - and they'd rather have him lose to Bernie than to Hillary. Meaning Bernie was 'their man' all along.
