I would offer this observation....that the big players within the White House (probably the Democratic Party as well) did the polling and knew by mid-summer 2015 (even four to six months prior to the Iowa Caucus), that a straight up Hillary versus Donald Trump election would go to Trump.

I suspect they did something quite similar for every single viable candidate who might challenge Her Thighness, even "fellow" democrats!

It's possible Russians believed Trump would lose - and they'd rather have him lose to Bernie than to Hillary. Meaning Bernie was 'their man' all along.
