Dutch Teenager’s Death Sets Off Debate, and Media Corrections (Noa Pothoven was not euthanized)
NY Times ^ | 06/06/19 | Iliana Magra

LONDON — By the time she was 17, the Dutch teenager had written a harrowing memoir recounting repeated sexual assaults and her subsequent experience with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anorexia.

Last year, when she was 16, she approached an end-of-life clinic in the Netherlands seeking euthanasia or assisted suicide, but was rejected because her parents had been unaware of her request and she needed their permission, according to a local newspaper profile published in December.

When her sister announced that the teenager, Noa Pothoven, had died at 17 early Sunday morning — without revealing where or how — the story ricocheted and metastasized around the globe. It spurred an outpouring of condolences on social media and set off debates about the nature of the Dutch law on euthanasia and the spread of misinformation.

In the initial absence of detailed information from medical officials or from Ms. Pothoven’s family, the internet was flooded with inaccurate reports that she had died via legal euthanasia, raising questions about how someone so young could be allowed to die voluntarily.

But the teenager did not die of euthanasia, according to her family, the Dutch health minister and the Royal Dutch Medical Association. She had stopped eating and drinking, her relatives said in a statement, and she was at home in the eastern Netherlands when she died, Dutch news outlets reported.

Steven Pleiter, the director of the end-of-life clinic in The Hague that Ms. Pothoven approached last year to help end her life, would not go into details about her case because of privacy reasons, but he said by phone on Wednesday, “It is a terrible story of a young woman who made the decision to end her life.”

“It would be fake news if we made this euthanasia,” he added.

I suspected this was fake news. Turns out it was a sad case of a mentally-troubled teenager (who may or may not have been the victim of multiple sexual assaults) who, in the end, chose to take her own life, as many teenagers across the world do.

The State did not murder her.

Accodring to wikipedia she was raped at age 11, again at age 12, and again at age 14.

Bizarre, yes?

But they turned her away because she didn’t have the parents’ consent?

What if she did?

According to bbc she died in ahospital. Under doctor’s “care” the care was feel good drugs.

And her parents made the decision to remove her feeding tube.

Sounds like her family let her die. No IV fluids? No feeding tube?

And she reported none of them to the police.

They just let her die. How compassionate.

She died in a hospital bed at her home of starvation/dehydration after she had stopped eating and drinking. Strange case, to be sure, but sounds like nothing more than suicide.

She not only took her own life, she was encouraged into it by the psychiatric community. I don’t consider it a science, and in this case the psychiatric community itself is insane.

Most likely lies.

And the story now is still ghoulish (they let her kill herself basically), but just not as much as before.

Such evolved people those Dutch.

*Spit*

She didn’t die on her own of natural causes.

Someone helped her. That’s euthanasia.

How so? I suppose you could make the case that her suicide was enabled by those close to her who basically stood aside and allowed her to kill herself but that's still a far cry from doctors administering euthanization themselves which is how the story was originally reported.

Not bizarre in any way.

Particularly if she was good looking or unusual looking, and drew people's eyes. People who survive a sexual assault often have a wariness about them (as if they are about ready to run) which predators pick up on.

They are less likely to fight back, and because they don't trust anyone they are easier to deceive since everyone gives their danger lookout a false positive.

I’d call it assisted suicide. (Euthanasia was over-stating it)

Sorry but that leaves the suppliers of fatal medications guilty of contributing to the death of another human.

She would not be dead now except for them, the way it happened.

Never ever believe the first story especially by the fake news networks.

I’m not even sure about the suicide angle. Instead she sounded like someone with a terminal disease, especially cancer, who is wracked by pain, and eventually no longer *able* to eat or drink.

No. I know a young woman who was raped repeatedly at school as a very young child. Only white girl in the school made her a target; having deadbeat parents also made her a target. She was so traumatized that whenever anyone made a sexual advance towards her, her mind went into survival mode and she shut down.

She was assaulted two more times, at 11 and 14, by family members. It wasn’t until she came into our lives that this horror show stopped. (Meanwhile, my kids are upset if the wifi doesn’t work or they don’t get straight A report cards).

You would be appalled at what some youngsters have gone through or the people they have around them. She will be in therapy for years.

They need prayers and compassion.

I think some very bad therapy murdered her. Recovered memory therapy really is a cult.

Young girls (and sometimes their mothers as well) get caught up in this, they may actually have had an assault, equally likely they have not (personally I think that if a child has been assaulted there will be evidence of it at the time.)

In any case, a person in recovered memory therapy is lead by the therapist to explore the memory in ever more vivid detail — with the notion that the patient has to get worse before she (sometimes he) gets better. Sometimes getting worse means multiple suicide gestures, and occasionally those suicide gestures end in death.

With a bad therapist dealing with these sexual issues, whether imagined or real, patient’s life (and sometimes her siblings and parents) gradually center around the therapy, and the therapist assumes a god-like role, and makes a whole lot of money by the way.

The patient may begin to manifest such things as multiple personality disorder as well, necessitating more therapy, and becomes increasingly dependent on the therapist, there is a lot of secondary gain as the patient gets sicker, and becomes the star patient, especially when in group therapy which almost invariably happens.

These patients in group therapy get extra individual therapy (a reward for being really sick) and of course all the patients in the group outdo each other in “remembering” ever more lurid details of the assault to gain the therapist’s approval. (Also, there may be more than one therapist.) The stories change and become more and more graphic and detailed as time goes on, and the patient becomes more disturbed, more dependent on the therapy, and less and less functional.

This is a racket and a very dangerous one. It destroys families. It ruins the life of the accusers who often destroy the lives of those who they accuse. Sometimes it is the accuser who commits suicide, sometimes it is the patient, sometimes it is both.

This primarily afflicts families of higher socioeconomic status who have the means to pay for such therapy, and for whom there is less stigma or no stigma attached to undergoing couselling.

Those of you are unfamiliar with this nightmare that has destroyed so many Americans would do well to inform yourselves about this and prepare for it, you could be the next victims, and it is wise to know how to react if you should find yourself or a loved one accused or accusing. It is not responsible to believe an accuser even if you are told “the woman or child must always be believed” because it is entirely possible the accuser has had some very bad therapy or the accuser (think Blaisey Ford) has an agenda.

Now, on the other hand, if there is objective evidence that your child has been assaulted, you must be very very careful in your choice of therapist for your child. If your child is in therapy and is getting worse and not better, than get her away from that therapist as quickly as possible. Therapy should be focused on getting the child to put that bad event behind her, assuring her that the evildoers have been dealt with and she will never see them again. The therapist should be rather matter of fact with the child — the attitude should be, yes, it was terrible but it is over and now you have your life ahead of you.

Excessively prolonged therapy is going to disrupt that normal forgetting by the way, and a return to normal life and normal relationships. The child needs to be helped to get over this, not dwell on it.

It is likely the parents need more therapy than the child so that they do not disrupt the normal forgetting of the child, and moving on with life.

If the memory is real it will fade with time with proper handling by the adults in the child’s life, and she will grow up to deal with the trauma with a healthy attitude just as she would with any other trauma. However, I think the matter probably should be brought up briefly with a professional counselor or physician when the child becomes a young adult and planning to marry. There could be some lingering issues of course, for the adult who understands now what happened, that probably should be discussed and faced so they do not harm the marriage.

So as I said, that child did not commit suicide in my layman’s, self-educated, opinion, she was murdered by therapeutic malpractice.
