California state bar moves to suspend Avenatti's law license, saying he poses 'substantial threat of harm to clients or the public'

The California State Bar, which oversees discipline for all California-licensed attorneys, issued a "consumer alert" Monday evening concerning Michael Avenatti, saying it was moving to suspend him from the practice of law because his alleged conduct "poses a substantial threat of harm to clients or the public."

The sudden development further accentuated Avenatti's dramatic public fall from grace -- he was once celebrated in liberal media circles as a potential challenger to President Trump -- as he faces numerous federal criminal charges in both California and New York courts for allegedly trying to blackmail the clothing giant Nike, impersonating a client, misappropriating client funds for personal purchases, and related matters.

"The State Bar of California has filed a petition to enroll this licensee on interim inactive status, alleging that the licensee’s conduct poses a substantial threat of harm to clients or the public," the State Bar said on its website, noting Avenatti is presumed innocent but that it expects to ultimately disbar him entirely from the practice of law. "The petition involves a charge that the licensee engaged in a major misappropriation of client funds."

California? Say what?

I would sooner think the state bar would declare California a sanctuary state for criminal attorneys, than this.

Thinking of Weissman, I often wondered what it would take to be disbarred.

Looks like it takes the State Law Bar?

What state could make it happen to Weissman.

Well, agreed in principle. He does need to be found guilty.

Amazing that just one year ago, serious people on Twitter were touting this narcissistic kleptomaniac for president, and he was on CNN and MSNBC twice a day bashing Trump -- and forcing the White house to respond.

And just one year later he has been brought so low it seems almost cruel to attack him at all.

He can’t be disbarred until there is a trial in State Bar Court, so he is suspended pending. The State Bar usually piggy backs criminal cases and acts to dissbar after those cases are adjudicated.

It certainly is quick. It usually takes the California State Bar around five years to move on attorneys like this. Very interesting.

Good luck with that. The CA state BAR is a criminal organization. A few years back the self-policing organization was caught tossing complaints against judges into the trash instead of investigating them. Kamala Harris was Atty General, and no charges ensued.
